Peter Boyle was born in Melbourne in 1951. He contracted polio as a young child and spent considerable time in hospitals, and at the age of eleven he moved with his family to Sydney. He attended Riverview College, where he discovered his gift for languages and interest in poetry, and he subsequently completed an Arts degree at the University of Sydney. He has worked as a teacher of English, History and Communications in secondary schools and in technical colleges.

Boyle’s first book of poetry, Coming Home From the World (1994), won the New South Wales Premier’s Award and the National Book Council Banjo Award. The Blue Cloud of Crying(1997) also won the Banjo Award and the Adelaide Festival Poetry Prize. Besides publishing his own work, Boyle has translated extensively from French and Spanish poets, notably Lorca, Vallejo, Eugenio Montejo and Pierre Reverdy.
