Fürstengruft
Du steigst hinab, das Fahl der Särge
Gibt sich geziert den Blicken hin;
Die Mauern fliehn, mit kühler Stärke
Geformt für einen Baldachin.
Du siehst dich um, die Fürsten ruhen,
Und der Beschließer ruft dir nach:
„Hier schläft in Manns- und Kindertruhen
Des Städtleins Glück und Ungemach!“
Du gehst hinein, der Brodem fängt dich;
Das edle Holz des Meisters knackt, –
Du bist erregt, dein Atem senkt sich,
Und legst die scheue Rose ab.

Royal Crypt
You descend, the coffins’ pallor
Coyly reveals itself to the gazes;
The walls flee, shaped with cool
Strength for a baldachin.
You look around, the rulers are resting,
And the housekeeper calls after you:
“The town’s happiness and misfortune sleeps
Here in the chests of men and children!”
You go inside, the vapors ensnare you;
The noble wood from a master hand cracks,
You’re worked up, your breath sinks,
And you set the shy rose down.
