THE APPLE AND THE CUCUMBER
Thirunelvely fair
morning seven
on the sidewalk
two hawkers
one has apples
in boxes
neatly arranged - sponged
The other has cucumbers
in Palmyra leaves
piled on gunny bags
An apple surveys
the new environment
through her ‘sponge eyes’
‘Who are you?’ she asks
Annoyed
by the stranger’s question
the cucumber answers
“I ‘m cucumber”
“Where are you from?”
“Sanguveli”
“How did you come?”
“By bullock cart!”
Now it is cucumber’s turn
“Who are you?”
“I’m apple”
“Where are you from?”
“Australia”
“How did you come?”
“By ship”
the apple proudly answers
Looking at the cucumber’s wrapper
apple asks
“What’s the name of your dress?”
“Palmyra leaf”
Casting a derisive glance
at the Palmyra wrapper
the apple – in – sponge asks
“How do they eat you?”
“With Palmyra jaggery”
“So you don’t have natural sweetness?”
“Not exactly. We are made for each other”
“Ok. Why do you always go for Palmyra products?”
“The Palmyra saves us, sustains us”
Third day
The apple lies blistered
by the hot sun
The hawker sprinkles water
No use
The hawker cries; “apple at half price!”
No one cares
The cucumber is fresh
protected by the Palmyra leaf
A woman buys it for Rs.20
The cucumber gives a parting shot:
“Stay in your own land
You will have nothing to worry”.
