WANG Pu, born in 1980, began writing poetry when he was only nine. While studying literature at the University of Beijing he edited student poetry magazines and was involved in organising several poetry festivals. Having gained his doctorate with a dissertation in Comparative Literature at New York University in 2012, he now works as a lecturer at Brandeis University, USA.
He is one of the few poets of his generation to deal in his prose poems with the work of the early Chinese Modernists who made a radical break with traditional Chinese verse forms. He carries on and updates this engagement with this founding moment of modern Chinese poetry. His poems and essays have been widely published in China and garnered him prizes including the Weiming Prize, the Liu Li’an Prize and the Poetry East-West Prize.
