Niko Grafenauer (b. 1940) is a poet, essayist, translator, and editor, who graduated in comparative literature from the Univerity of Ljubljana. Formelry a freelance writer, and an editor at the major publishing house Mladinska knjiga, Grafenauer is currently the director of a prominent intellectual magazine, The New review (Nova revija) and its affiliated publicatuions.

He published books of poetry including Večer pred praznikom (An Evening Before Holiday, 1962), Stiska jezika (The Anxiety of Language, 1965), Štukature (Stucco-Works, 1975), Palimpsesti (Palimpsests, 1984), Elegije (Elegies, 1990), Samota (The Solitude, 1994), Vezi daljav (Bonds of Distances, 1996), and Odtisi (Imprints, 1999).

He published nine books of poems for children, and five books of criticism. His poetry, inspired by Mallarme, Hölderlin and Celan whose work Grafenauer translated, is formal yet powerfully meditative. He has won the Prešeren Prize for lifetime achievement.
