* 05.08.1958, Cuiabá, 巴西
居住于:Brasília, 巴西

Nicolas Behr was born in Cuiabá in 1958. Both his parents lived in Germany and Canada before moving to Brazil during the Second World War. Arriving upon Brazil, they initially settled in Cuiabá (Central Region), but later moved to Brasília in 1974.

The impact of this change on teenage Nicolas, from the countryside to its cold and modernist capital, was crucial to the later development of Behr’s poetic work. He began writing his poetry driven by a deep necessity to cope with this new and hostile environment. In 1977 he published his first book entitled Iogurte com Farinha (‘Yogurt with Flour’) and sold more than 8,000 copies at the time. He was one of the founding members of the Mimeograph Generation, a group of young rebellious poets who published and sold their own books directly to the public in fairs, bars, cinemas and bank lines in the 1970s.

The success of his books transformed Nicolas in one of the most important voices of the movement known as Poesia Marginal, and that also brought him notoriety among the authorities. These so called Misfit Poets were well-known critics of the Brazilian military regime, often satirizing Government policies and public figures. Nicolas was once put on trial for carrying ‘pornographic material’ (there was no official categorization for anti-establishment literature) and forbidden to publish poetry for one year (1978-1979). He responded to the verdict by writing poems on the surface of tiles and displaying them in public places. The collected poems of this period were called O que me der na telha (‘whatever comes to me on the tiles – Brazilian slang for ‘I will do whatever I want’).

Nowadays it is impossible to talk about the literary production of Brasília without citing the name of Nicolas Behr. The poet has published more than 25 books and has held the city as his main source of inspiration. Nicolas is also an active environmentalist and runs a nursery garden with rare species of plants from the Brazilian Cerrado (tropical savanna) vegetation.

He is married with three children and lives as a landscaper in Brasília.
