Meg Bateman was born in Edinburgh in 1959.

She grew up in an English speaking culture in the Scottish Lowlands but soon realized that there was more to being Scots than just living in Scotland. This is probably one of the reasons why she began studying Celtic at Aberdeen University. She graduated with a PhD in medieval Gaelic religious poetry. She taught Gaelic in the Celtic department at Aberdeen University and now teaches at Sabhal Mor Ostaig, the Gaelic college in Skye.

Her Gaelic poetry has appeared in numerous anthologies such as Other Tongues (1990) and Twenty of the Best (1991). She has also translated Gaelic poetry into English in an Anthology of Scottish Women Poets (1991) and the Harp`s Cry (1993). Since she is relatively new to Gaelic she is in a unique position of being able to approach subjects that many would consider taboo. She covers many themes in her poems which range from female love and sexuality, to the weaknesses of human relationships, family life, love and loss.

Most of her poems cover issues that relate to the experiences of women as wives, lovers, mothers, daughters and sisters.
