Ko Un is arguably the most significant ambassador of contemporary Korean poetry.

Born in 1933 in Kunsan, in the North Cholla Province, he was in a Buddhist monastery for ten years following the traumatic experience of the Korean War. In 1960 his first volume of poetry, “Beyond Emotions”, appeared.

After his time as a monk he quickly became one of the leading and most original lyrical poets of his country.

His political engagement against the military dictatorship in South Korea – from 1961 to the end of the 90ies – led to several arrests, especially following the 1980 “Massacre of Kwangju“, in witch hundreds of demonstrators were killed.

Since that time, Ko Un, who is know for his engagement for democracy, human rights, and the rapprochement of his country to North Korea, has been invited to lecture in Harvard, Berkeley, Verona, Sydney, Prag, Madrid and Berlin.
