Jan Volker Röhnert was born in Gera in 1976 and grew up in Oberndorf near Gera. He lives in Berlin nowadays.

He studied literature, German as a foreign language, educational science, and Romance studies at Friedrich Schiller University in Jena. During his studies he spent some time at Goethe Institute in Genua. In 2000 and 2001 he worked as a language assistant in Toulon, France. He finished his studies with a thesis about Rolf Dieter Brinkmann.

In 2003 and 2004 he spent some time in London, Paris, and New York. From 2003 to 2008 he was teaching literature at Friedrich Schiller University. His dissertation about poetry in the age of cinematography was published in Wallstein Verlag in 2007. He worked as a lector for DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) at the University of Sofia in Bulgaria from 2008 to 2010, and since autuumn 2011 he is teaching literature at the Braunschweig University of Technology'

Röhnert writes poetry and essays about poetry, published in anthologies and magazines. His first book of poetry was published in 2001. More collections of poetry followed, the latest being Metropolen in 2007 and Notes from Sofia in 2011. Next to his writing and his academic work he is translating poetry from France and the USA by poets like Robert Creeley and Craig Arnold. In 2007 his translation of Christopher Edgar: Zuviel Gelächter in der Dunkelheit was published as well as Craig Arnold: Fleisch geworden in 2008. For his work, Jan Volker Röhnert received many stipends and the Poetry Debut Prize of Literarisches Colloquium Berlin in 2003.
