Aonghas MacNeacail was born in 1942 on the Isle of Skye.

He is a well known Scottish poet, writing in the Gaelic language. He also works as a journalist, broadcaster, researcher, scriptwriter and librettist.

He studied at Glasgow University and took part in several writer’s fellowships. He also received several writer’s bursaries and prizes for his literary works, such as the Grampian Television Poetry Award and the Scottish Association for the Speaking of Verse Diamond Jubilee Award. He does not only write poetry but also works for the theatre, the radio, television and for movies. He does all of this in either Gaelic or English. In his works he discusses the problematic history of Scotland as well as the fact that the Gaelic language is dying out. But he also focusses on the the depiction of human relationships. His works present typical Gaelic poetry. Some of his lyric work has been set to music or adapted for the screen in collaboration with musicians and filmmakers. Among his poems are: Gollancz, 1976 / Seeking Wise Salmon 1983, Oideachadh Ceart – A Proper Schooling, 1996 /.
