Anthony Phelps studied chemistry, ceramics and photography in the USA and in Canada. Returning to Haiti, he founded, with the help of other poets, the poetry group known as Haïti littéraire and the journal Semences. He was also the director of cultural programming at Radio-Cacique, where he produced a weekly program of poetry and theatre. In 1964 he was forced to immigrate to Montréal, where he worked as an actor and a journalist and founded a company specialized on the recording of poetry.

He got awarded several prizes and his work is translated into a dozen languages and taught at universities all over the world.
Phelps’ work reflects the life conditions in Haiti, the complexities of the Caribbean people emerging from Indian, African, and European ancestry p.ex. in the book La bélière Caraïbe (1980) and the question of exile and nationalism p.ex. in the poetry books Orchidée nègre (1987) and La bélière Caraïbe (1980), which was awarded the Cuban poetry prize, Casa de las Americas.
