Ukrainian poet, writer and essayist Andriy Lyubka (Андрій Любка) was born on December 3, 1987 in Riga, Latvia and grew up in Vynohradiv in Transcarpathia. He graduated from the Mukachevo Military School. Afterwards he studied philology at the University of Uzhorod until 2009 and Balkan Studies at the University of Warsaw until 2014. During this time, Lyubka also became politically active, supporting Viktor Yushchenko in 2004 and the candidate Aljaksandr Milinkevich in 2006 during the elections in Belarus, where he became persona non grata as a result. In 2013 Lyubka was an active participant on the Maidan protests and has been writing about political events in Ukraine ever since. 

Lyubka works as an essayist, critic and a translator from Polish, Croatian, Serbian and English. His poems and translations have appeared in various in magazines and he has published several collections of poetry, his debut being Visim misjaciv shysofreniyi (Eight Months of Schizophrenia, 2007). Moreover, he writes short stories and novels. His first novel Karbid (2015) was short-listed in the final selection of the Book of the Year by BBC Ukraine. Its Polish translation was short-listed for the Angelus Central-European Literary Award in 2017. Next to other awards he received the Kovalev Foundation literary prize in the USA and the Shevelov Prize for the best book of essays of 2017 in Ukraine. 

His cultural-political columns appear in the online magazine »Zbruc«, in the Kyiv daily newspaper »Den«, and in the Krakow magazine »New Eastern Europe«. 

Lyubka is known to a greater public as a participant of various European and Ukrainian literature congresses and festivals and a curator of international poetry festivals, e.g. the International Literary Festival “Kiev Lavra” and Meridian Czernowitz. His poems were translated, among other languages, to Hungarian, German, Russian, Belorussian, English, Polish and Portuguese.

Andriy Lyubka is a member of the Ukrainian PEN and lives in Uzhorod.
