Eiland

Er staat een vrouw
voor het raam.
Ze kijkt naar buiten.
Ze kijkt
wie er is.

De boot naar een ander land? -
vaart niet meer. Een eiland nog,
vereenzaamd. Ze eet niet meer. Drinkt
niet. Slaapt in een witte nachtpon.

Op een platform onder Majakovski's gezicht
– dat spijkerbroeken aanprijst, a bit too baggy –
wachten, alsof we denken. Aan een huis.

Met voor het raam
een vrouw.
Haar gezicht bleek
tussen het ongekamde haar.

Dank je zeggen, verdomme, en please
en elk verzoek vriendelijk, vriendelijk.

Ik heb aangebeld, op de deur gebonsd
een aantal maal haar naam geroepen.

Dan staat er voor het raam een
vrouw.
Het is mijn moeder.

Ze zegt: ik ben jouw moeder.
Denk niet na, alle schepen die zijn verbrand.

Island

A woman is standing

at the window.

She’s looking outside.

She’s looking to see

who’s there.

The boat to another land?

Service suspended. Still an island,

isolated. She has stopped eating. Doesn't

drink. Sleeps in a white nightie.

On a platform under Mayakovsky’s face

– which praises jeans, a bit too baggy

waiting, as if we’re thinking. Beside a house.

With a woman

at the window

Her face pale

behind the unkempt hair.

Say thank-you, for chrissake, please

and always ask politely, politely.

I rang the bell, banged at the door

and called her name a few times.

Then there’s a woman

standing at the window.

It’s my mother.

She says: I’m your mother,

Don't think about it, all the boats are burnt.
