Acentos sonoros recuerdan a Siberia.

Siglo.

America

Their name was Krusevac, now Cruz. The buildings perspired. It was an island or a mountain littered with shacks. It’s a men’s affair. The women stored potatoes, constructed the world. An affair of lusterless traces, so it was thought. Sweetly melodious landscapes with accordion in the background. Cleverness. Prow accumulating salt. Take my arm, sever the ligament: I need to lose my taste for ajvar. The birds hushed at their step. Oar. In the depths, the fish intuiting. Some graves hold entire families. But these women are safe. All the tongues of Europe disappeared. Earth. Apple candy doesn’t smell like cloves. Each letter spells a sojourn. These women are my mothers. From that day forward—America—the skin of my cheeks a prairie.

Everything precise, stone atop stone, beneath the stun. Glued onto my skin—the sole of my foot—an exact name, a serrated shard (stinger or blade or tensed knot), glass in the urethra. I retain a voice that is shadow, missive and annunciation: America collapses. There is a mountain or house facing the sea hiding a secret. Cloak, the desert is a cloak. A beast is heard bursting with forges: Blacks and Whites inventing inheritance. In my hands I hold a country from which I’ve been flung. Five million emigrants fit in the river basin of a common blood. America is a mother who kills.

Rust. To contain the fist. The gravity of last leaves and snow. Listen to the insular gasps. So distant, so near. The sea gleams for everyone but beside the coal only fear remains. To defend ourselves from. Sonorous accents recall Siberia. The cold, grating. But in Siberia autumn never comes. Here—nearly trembling—we have to go side by side. That garden or wall or new earth. To make America. Rust: from Portobelo all the way to Patagonia. Steel with no distinctions. Eyeballing it you trace the weave. Dust clouds the expanses of earth. Slowness among the passengers: to plaster our ear to the subte: something is inflamed. Something already marks the body.

America a sonorous desert. Chicken stew to raise the dead, ají de gallina to calm crowds or rainbow trout for the hair of the dog. Dark clouds modulate temperaments of valley and bufeo dolphin. Creaking of Machu Picchu ballasts. “Dark vocation, this, being a saint.” I had a plot of land, they took it from me, now there’s an amusement park: the rides replicate death and they are death. Something on the sidewalk (tiny trench, trench, give me back my sound mind, the sure face of my land) is tomb and lineage. Aguachile flaring against the jaw. Wounded cacao dragging along a clinking of stones. Cárcamo de agua de Tlaloc, seaside country homes in Manantiales. Cabo Polonio in my memory. And the fountain in ceaseless supply to the dry, greenish mate rinsing my grandmother’s voice.

They said it was born from blows, from the barrios where the sounds of son are slow and voices clear their throats and the barrels of booze are shoved down without even a slice of bread; they said it was born from contempt, from slaves, from bitter nights in bed among soldiers and coppery bodies; they said it was a martyr—they were, are, wrong—and then they said something about mirrors and something about pork meat, something about new first names and new last names; they demonstrated how to use a wheel (zero was already a known quantity); the fever almost killed it. And from each blow it’s come out stronger. Like poetry, America is a hard scar on the body.

Hispaniola. As if it were the first land. Which it is. And all the nights in America might fit in that memory now. Imprint. Rum makes men into brutes, I tell myself. My grandmother prays with her glass of vodka beside her, to pray is to lie to yourself, she tells me, but it soothes the soul. Like false gold distilled. Birth. Like a gallows you give yourself up to with open mouth, desirous of failed sustenance To mount the sheep, I tell myself. Now Ducati sneakers, the gift of gab that lures a female hey baybee, gold chains around the neck, fine shirt, the brand trapping the body, shouting provenance. America collapses, and no one’s noticed. The other America has sucked away her brain.

Give me a tostado. A slang to sustain the vocal chords of my tongue. I want a trapeze. To float on it. I want the sharp that comes from caffeine. To be submerged in. The other land. Whole gallons. Thousands of litres of blood. Who they were and who they are. Everyone perched on a wire. Precipice. From the ruins of the tongue an arrogant countenance. There is a strip of land with no name. At the bottom of the cup, a gypsy at the Parque Forestal tells me, there is an image: a man who still remembers his daughter. Stop, the other land and that masculine profile that barely forms in the shadow. Serbia was a shelter—Atlantic—today it is a lake. The idea of lake.

From the grave a flower. Discolored plastic, earth. Grobnica-Paris. From Europe sown field napes of neck cisterns to keep vestiges. Mist and coal. Hay and dredge, floating. Before the seaweed graze, luminous ebb of faces. The entire family splintered. Museum oils. Cemetery and niche to go deep into the nerve. Purple riverbed, planting of bodies in other bodies. Cauterization. To cross the forest: great faith in lips. Not even the uniform saves. There, in the Gulf of Mexico, the birds secrete buzzings. Cavern or thistle. Gauze sea, key to the fold. The surface of the water recalls the dead. “To vanish, among the wrinkles of each fold of the mother.” Contain the air. Lung. Breathe deeply. Does it hurt? Does it hurt here, yes right here? It’s trapped fear. It’s America bound into the back of every knee. Splinter, flower picked at Kalemegdan. And on every corner the image of a garden made of voices.

The plates empty. Deep down, the field of gravity is tone. Blue. Not blue, rather province and trace, where we’ve left “Eleonora floating in our gaze.” Sky. Our gaze toward the homeland. Her country expands her foments her imposes itself on her. America is neither orchid nor animal nor relative. My grandmother’s voice was smooth. America wanders among strips of land. Transports dirty water. Reappears among shit. Mother America. Father America. Make some offering. Make some bodily offering to the Pachamama. Enter into this land and dig an orifice in your tongue. Form and passage in the sermon of stones. Blind knot among rivers. Mountain range. Your skin—Atacama & Sonora, is concentration, turnings in a circle, cartography and knots. Century.
