Port

For the tenth night in a row they're building a port in the neighbouring street,
Cheerful voices ring out, the noise of a crane, the knocking of
Metal on metal, something is lowered, lifted up, dropped.
And it's clear that it will be a French, Greek
Or Italian port, that's definite, if you judge
From the smells, which float in through our window at night.
But each time I go out to the street in the morning
And turn round the corner, - I see that nothing has changed there:
There's no port, no cheerful workers, no smell of fish and seaweed.
Therefore I work at night more and more often, with the window wide-open,
And it's already the second day I've gone to bed when it gets light.
It's amazing that nobody hears such a thing and nobody notices.
Whoever I ask, they all immediately change the subject.
