UMA BOTÂNICA DA PAZ: VISITAÇÃO

Tenho uma flor
de que não sei o nome

Na varanda,
em perfume comum
de outros aromas:
hibisco, uma roseira,
um pé de lúcia-lima

Mas esses são prodígios
para outra manhã:
é que esta flor
gerou folhas de verde
assombramento,
minúsculas e leves

Não a ameaçam bombas
nem românticos ventos,
nem mísseis, ou tornados,
nem ela sabe, embora esteja perto,
do sal em desavesso
que o mar traz

E o céu azul de Outono
a fingir Verão
é, para ela, bênção,
como a pequena água
que lhe dou

Deve ser isto
uma espécie da paz:

um segredo botânico
de luz

A Botanics of Peace: Visitation

I have a flower,

name unknown

On the balcony,

a scent shared

with other aromas:

a hibiscus, a rose bush,

a pot of lemon verbena

But those are marvels

for another morning:

because this flower

has sent out sudden leaves of green

bedazzlement,

tiny and fragile

No bombs threaten it

no romantic breezes,

no missiles, or tornados,

it doesn’t even know about the salt,

however close to home,

brought in slant by the sea

And the blue autumn sky

disguised as summer

is, for this plant, a blessing,

like my proffered

little drop of water

This must be

a species of peace:

one of the light’s

botanical secrets
