Soledat oberta

katalonščina | Blai Bonet

Em dol tot, fins la camisa,
a damunt el pit cremat.
I les paraules em nafren
quan sonen damunt la llengua
amb el seu significat.

No puc parlar de tant que estim… La parla
és sempre de baladres i sal grossa:
un agre ganivet que em reboteix
bavant-me sal i sang, i sal i sang,
pel meu bosquet senzill de parla verda…

I no vull tanta parla que s’esquerda.
Mes, les meves paraules de «bellveure»,
«taronja», «llimonera», «estrella», «amic»,
les tenc, obscures, fent una plorada
al carreró banyat de la Gran Pena.

Em dol la blancor dels ossos.
Em dol el bel de la sang.

Aquest carreró de sang,
per on ningú no passa, i tot pas hi ressona.

Per la meva sang sona
la frescor de la font
que lluu cap a les set.

I els pins… —so dels meus pins!—

«estrella», «ala», «llimonera», «sal»,

i no pot esser torre…

És curiós…, però jo no tenc pena.
És ver que ja fa temps no he vist estrelles,

d’eixa ona meva, repetida i blava.

Welcome solitude

angleščina

Everything aches, even the shirt

resting on this burnt chest.

Words wound me

as they sound off the tongue

with their intent.

I cannot speak such lov… Words

are meant for bushes and coarse salt:

a stinging knife that swells in me

frothing in salt and blood, and blood and salt,

around my simple thicket of verdant words…

I have no want for such brittle words.

Mine, my own language made of burning bush,

orange, lemon tree, star, friend

belongs to me, shaded words, weeping

on the road bathed in our Great Shame.

The whiteness of my bones pains me.

The bloody shroud pains me.

This blood-covered road,

on which no one walks as every step echoes.

In my blood it rushes,

the freshness of the fount

which glistens at the strike of seven.

And the pines… - oh the sound of my pines! –

bringing their lush foliage,

as the day brings its reddest dawn,

unaffected by the most fervent of greenery.

My cheek quivers in my suffering,

as my pain burgeons in me

like a wing takes to flight, or the mountain to the sublime.

It was law that God should bite me

when I my head appeared in His loving light,

already baptised in the colour of brimstone.

A genet leaped from my blood,

and love, the size of my body,

was riddled in red tooth marks,

like the red footmarks at a murder scene.

A weasel was sucking me dry

in the garden of my heart,

the melody of a nightingale’s throat,

when the day was dawning. – That is to say, it was already singing.

Yet one day, so bright the sun was! - Such brightness! –

and these words soared out of my throat:

star, wing, lemon tree, salt, cloud, son, mother, rose, fresh, water

Oh, voice! Oh, song!

From His bite, God left saliva behind

in the wound and the freshness of His great lips.

His saliva flooded my blood.

And a voice full of nests was born to me.

Love made me as large as God’s presence.

Thirst made me as large as God’s presence.

The founts continued with their quiet streaming

as large as a dove.

Love, thirst, grew

higher and higher, like the midday,

containing their rage like a lashing of Juniper branches.

I am stretched out like a land

who is consoled by water and stone

but can never be a tower…

Curious… but I am no longer ashamed.

It is true I have not seen stars for many a night,

nor that simplest of seas that strokes the beach

replete in blue lilies, hushed and alone.

It is true. There is little to be glad about.

But there is always the offshoot of an orange

that creeps in silence back to its tree.

And humble stones, which, for the first time,

feel angelic as they fly towards fruit,

or a bird that had the fortune

to die in flight.

Curious… I am brine,

and yet at the heart of this little

wave of mine there is sugarcane, repeated and blue.

All of you who live content:

the sun and my heart go with you.

[Temps de flors]

katalonščina | Odile Arqué

Temps de flors:
l'orfenesa és una porta
que s'ha de traspassar amb cautela.

Oblidarem la velocitat del lladre
el desmai exuberant escala avall
el bord que tancava l'aigua
i ara se la vol beure.

El temps de flors és només nostre.

Les males herbes,
verdet
de runa.

[Budding season]

angleščina

Budding season:

orphanhood is a door

that must be crossed with caution.

We are going to forget the thief’s speed

The exuberant willow sweeping its way down the garden stairs

The boor who closed the water and now he wants to drink it.

The budding season is ours only.

Weeds, the ruin’s mould.

Dictat

tancada
no viva encara
la teva mort
que esperava
l’olor de la flor blanca
llimones i negre
el bec i la por
atenta.

Té la flor.

No és oberta
no és temps.

Té la flauta
de l’ocell que em reclama
agafa
l’olor de llimona
i la cera
que em posaran als llavis tancats
i tu canta
merla meva
magnòlia encara verda.

Dictation

angleščina

I am the branch upon which the blackbird whistled.

I am the hand who does not want the petals

closed tight

not alive yet,

your death

who was waiting

for the white flower’s odour,

lemons, and the black beak,

and attentive fear.

Here’s the flower.

It hasn’t blossomed,

it is not time yet.

Here’s the flute

belonging to the bird calling to me,

Take a whiff of lemon,

and the wax

that they will smear on my closed lips,

and you, sing

my blackbird

young magnolia still young.

[Es moren les coses]

katalonščina | Odile Arqué

Es moren les coses si no tens
un paper
i el fang és tou.

Et mors
si lleva el rent
i no el contemples.

Et mors
d’aquella forma de morir
que ningú veu
i tampoc cal.

No mostraràs
les teves morts
a qui no és fet
per posar-te les mans
sota el clatell.

[Things die]

angleščina

Things die if you are out

of paper

Budding season:and the turning clay is soft.

You die

if the yeast rises

without pause for reflection.

You die,

the cause of death

no one sees

and neither should they.

You refuse

to show your deaths

to those who are not willing

to hold the nape of your neck

with their own hands.

[Tu no en parlaves]

katalonščina | Odile Arqué

Tu no en parlaves.
Les             meves
preguntes
s’estimbaven
pel                teu
silenci

                  s’estimben
                              per l’orgull dels germans
                              d’haver-te tingut jove

i jo quedava full en blanc
perquè era un full en blanc
tacat
de passes:
la remor
que l’esclerosi alentia
fins al bon dia nineta
assegut al meu llit.

                                        Venjar la humanitat
                                                   era creure

[You never spoke of it]

angleščina

You never spoke of it.

All my questions

tumbled down your

silence

     They tumbled down

the siblings’ pride

for having had you young.

I ended up a blank slate

because I was a blank slate

marked

by footsteps:

a soft shuffling

that sclerosis slowed down

until that Good morning little girl

perched on my bed.

Avenging humanity

meant believing

Even

                                     though.

                                         Believing even still.

Octubre

katalonščina | Odile Arqué

Passa una bala
armilla verda
i esclata el teu temps.

Em traspues la pell
com et traspuava la llàgrima
la sal permanent
al braç de la butaca
de quan el sorge
                          coronat primer
va dir
democràcia.

Una bala encén
el llum frontal
i esbotza la porta
del teu silenci.

Buit endins
toco el que som
i l’horror,
pare.

October

angleščina

A bullet flies

past green vest

and your time explodes in me.

You ooze through my skin

as once that tear oozed through you

its salt permanent

to the chair’s armrest

since the soldier

crowned the first

pronounced

democracy.

A bullet lights up

your headlight

and kicks down the door

to your silence.

Inside the void

I touch what we are

and horror,

father.

[Soc pell d’esvorancs]

katalonščina | Odile Arqué

Soc pell d’esvorancs.
Amb un dit
ressegueixo
la cendra de mi
ran dels ulls,
les arestes
que no saps fràgils,
el séc que de tu
porto a l’espinada.

Un dia aquesta veu
regalarà
amb perillosa transparència
la corba elàstica de l’arc perfecte,
el somriure de les dunes
a la pell eixarmada.

I serà veu d’esvorancs:
celebració ritual
de la memòria.

angleščina

I am skin made of rifts.

With one finger

I trace

the ash that is me

around my eyes,

the arris

whose fragility you do not expect,

the scar that is you

borne in my spine.

One day this voice

will gift

in dangerous transparency

the elastic curve of a perfect arch,

the dunes’ smile

at anointed skin.

And it will be the voice for all rifts:

ritual celebration

of memory.

Els polps

katalonščina | Maria Josep Escrivà

                    Quedaba poco.
                    Estábamos muy cerca.
                    No queda nada.
                                       Fran García

Grup d’individus
que habiten sobre fons marins,
colgats

promesa i maleeixen

llurs sorts, perquè,                         precisament avui,
                                                           bufa llevant.

d’ofegats: dues mil sis-centes boies,
si és que tenen                                  sort de surar.
La majoria                                                        desapareix per sempre,
espectres entaforats en cadufs.
Amb ells es fon la terra putrefacta
que no els espera.

Quedava poc i ja no en queda res:
soledat glacial,
salobre sepultura,
plàncton d’indiferència.

No parle ara de nàufrags, sinó
de depredadors que devoren polps
de tres cors que devoren
cossos d’ofegats i bomben
sang blava,
rica
en coure.

Trista espècie humana, se’n diu.

                                                        Quedava poc.
                                                        Érem
                                                        ben a la vora
i ens havien donat                       la paraula: «anirem,
us anirem a pescar                      abans que tot
                                                        siga carronya
al fons del mar.»

Octopuses

angleščina

Not long to go.

We were very close.

There is nothing left.

Fran García

Group of individuals

inhabiting the sea floor,

buried

in substrate

or moving across its surface.

Benthic species, or they are called.

With two fat eyes that afford them

excellent vision,

they can change in appearance and texture

in accordance with whatever chance may bring.

Why talk about octopuses when I want to talk about castaways?

Men and women drifting on the sea

like colourful buoys.

In one year, two thousand six hundred buoys:

as many neighbours as live in my town.

There is no drift to bring them closer, sharp

shadows that dream of another promised

land and curse

their luck, because, precisely today,

a Levant wind blows.

They possess excellent feelers

and can taste whatever they happen to touch.

They are carnivores, octopuses. They feed on fish,

crustaceans, molluscs

and drowned

bodies: two thousand six hundred buoys,

if they’re lucky enough to float.

Most of them disappear forever,

spectres stuffed in drains.

With them the putrid earth is melting

and is not waiting for them.

Not long to go and there’s nothing left:

glacial solitude,

brackish burial,

plankton of indifference.

Instead of talking about the castaways now,

I’ll talk of predators that devour octopuses

with three hearts that devour

drowned bodies and pump out

blue blood,

rich

in copper.

Sad human species, or so it is called.

Not long to go.

We were

just around the corner

and they’d given us the word: “we’re coming,

we’re coming to fish you, before anything else

be carrion

on the sea floor.

Translated by Jacob Rhodes

ressuscitat.

The Calm Years

angleščina

There he sits atop a stump of an orange tree

to alight the burden of responsibility

tied up in his day-to-day. He lugs around

gilded lungs of air, a fatigue that life still

holds on to for him. But beyond the window

my chest aches for him,

as if his scar had opened

a crater in my very soul.

As if stopping meant giving up,

he cautiously faces the pile of firewood

and chops them into fragments, old habits.

He stores away every log for the hearth

and with soft bark for fingers

my father starts out down the path of the calm years.

In the silence of his truce,

birdsong rings out. April

bursts open like a rose, and he listens

with a shiver of fear and grandeur,

for the first time he is far from the man

he once was, standing before his first nightingale

brought back to life.

Obstacles

katalonščina | Maria Josep Escrivà

Fou la vida un combat sense victòria.
                         Jaume Pérez-Montaner

i tanmateix, com l’ocell condemnat
pudent m’he desvetllat.
És en els mots
que el meu món se m’ordena, però el dia
a dia, sempre a l’aguait, se’ls empassa,

Obstacles

angleščina

Life was but a battle without victory.

Jaume Pérez-Montaner

I seek out silence and the world howls back

and amidst the noise, I long to be

in the very nakedness of the poem, where verse

aches as again I shan’t write today.

I nestle into the ravaged cavern that are these arms

and yet still, like a bird condemned

to fly, each morning I evacuate them.

I dream I was in the woods, but once on

the stinking asphalt I awoke.

It is through verse

that my world moulds me, but the day to

day, always observing, swallows its words,

as if they were but a handful of nuts.

Desire is always the primary incentive,

the sole freedom on this path

to nowhere, even though time gnaws away

at our tired flesh and thorns of dismay

prickle our skin. Whatever will be,

will be, or so the saying goes, and to deny it,

the primary motive that pushes us:

to live against prognosis.

Thus, in the unstoppable flow of time,

I am the only decisive obstacle

with permission granted from the rounded stone of the tomb.

No words. Only pain can describe pain.

que he estès a terra, just on un soldat
custodia, quiet com un molló,
un grapat de cadàvers. I l’espàtula
es paralitza enlaire. No pels morts,

Tears of molten wax

fall onto the pages of the newspaper

that I left sprawled open on the ground,

just where a soldier stands guard, as still as death,

over a pile of cadavers. The shovel freezes

in mid-air. Not for the dead,

obscure and good, nor for the leaden mien

the stoic warmonger beseeches,

but rather out of delight, there below

my knees, with which the militiaman

looks at the camera, the obscenity

with which he ignores the other men’s deaths.

In a blaze of fury, I scrunched it up

into a ball, the paper, I sunk it in

a ship scolded in hot wax.

And so, by sheer coincidence,

the mundane act of body-waxing

becomes a bellicose offensive

of unforeseen consequences.

La llum és l'excepció

katalonščina | Maria Josep Escrivà

La llum és una treva, una excepció,
un escull com una víscera lluent surant
en un mar negre. Negre d’absolut
on tot tornarà a ser
quan un dia s’acabarà la treva
de l’aire.

L’infant que riu és una treva.
I mirar-lo.

definitiva.

Light is the Exception

angleščina

Light is a truce, an exception

a reef as bright as viscera floating

in a black sea. Black of the absolute

where everything exists again

the day the truce of air

comes to an end.

The child who laughs is a truce.

And so it is to look at him. And laugh in his tiny time.

Truce in imposed non-being.

The calm of night is a truce, an exception.

The exception of one who knows

He is in silence,

while dew falls,

in silence,

and writes in silence.

The word is a truce,

a truce of light, from night to night

definitive.

Poema a la intempèrie

katalonščina | Maria Josep Escrivà

Fer un poema com viure
un amor clandestí.
De vegades ruïnes, de vegades
espina i al final poema ranci
d'impossibles.

Un poema com un petit problema
domèstic, o queixa visceral
que en dir-la foradara muntanyes.
Com una soledat només meua
que mai enyore.
Com qui sóc, com qui mai
voldria ser.
Un poema urgent com un viatge
que només l'avidesa d'unes mans
assumiria.

i la terra, encara tèbia,
des del seu silenci primitiu,
aviat l'oblida.

Poem to inclemency

angleščina

To write a poem like living

a forbidden love.

At times ruins, at times

bony, and finally, a stale poem

of impossibilities.

A poem as a small domestic

issue, or a visceral complaint,

that through its uttering mountains become hollowed.

As a solitude that is mine only,

but I never long for.

As I am, as I would never

like to be.

An urgent poem as a journey

which only the greed of certain hands

would take on.

To write a poem as if to carry out an ample

act of thanksgiving, as if to breathe

primal mirth.

A poem like a farewell the sun never sets on.

A poem like a prayer for the rain.

To write a poem

as alive as green grass,

a poem as false as nothingness.

A rotten poem like a regret,

like original sin in the pit of our stomach.

A poem more moribund than nostalgia itself.

A futile poem, our very own poem

as if sharing a table.

A poem of woe, a poem of roots, a poem to inclemency.

A living and vital poem like a tree.

To write a poem, finally, as a lover

searching in every kiss, just as a furrow

breaches the earth

and the earth, still tepid,

in its primitive silence,

soon forgets.

Maria Magdalena

d'estar enterrada sota d'ella mateixa,

i, tot seguit, granat, s'entrega per vosaltres i per molts,
on viu en pau, no pas amb tranquil·litat,
ciutat on cremaven molt d'encens,
en lloc de matar-los, els feien matar;

que mai no aconsegueix ser el Joan del món;
perquè ningú no li ho deia,

que tot just havia estat trobada
pobra llei, pobre amor,
llei pobra, amor de pobre!;
cova on una dona closa
algun cop fent hores extraordinàries de Maria;

descobrí que la vida podia ser mentida;
çque consisteix a poder perdonar,
"Jo tampoc no et condemno.
Vés-te'n i no tornis a pecar."

estrictament perquè hi veia i hi sentia clar.

Maria, i què si et vare enamorar
I què, Maria, si t'importà no res
a qualsevol ministeri d'assumptes estrictament exteriors?

I què, nena? I què, Eva Maria Magdalena,
perquè qui l'abraça a Ell abraça el Pare,
tant si ho sap com si només s'hi sent aconseguit,

I què, Maria, si no sabies

que Jesús, tot just ressuscitat,

i dóna profunda importància

Mary Magdalene

angleščina

When the boys from the shire

wanted to be simple-hearted without the others back home catching on,

they’d spend time with her as she had a fine working hand

and, as she walked down the stairs eyes gleaming with youth,

she would often say:

“I’d like to see you again.”

Straight after, as if we were still under the tree’s awning,

she’d repeat for the umpteenth time

the true name of the circumcised and sinful

--John…

Once the boy had left her

in a realm of memories at wine’s door,

at the threshold of repetition,

on the corner of her exhumers

to be buried under her very self,

Mary Magdalene, a lowered black and white flag,

a woman’s flag half hoisted,

she was a living a book. She used to say:

--Only those who love can be good. I know this.

Solely those who are loved can be good.

I am this way with you, as you are with me

when the dark falls on Panner’s Square.

Because us,

only we two are left,

we hold both life and heart as if ours to take,

the early afternoons,

the sweat on our skin,

when everything leads back to the same house number.

That same evening after diving into bed like into the sea,

especially after getting out

with a senseless briny tang in her mouth, a brine

orphaned from the sea that remains far off, walking about, unripe,

she felt pressured to live, in her lived on the name Mary.

After thousands of boys, I realised

I loved to love, living in love,

that love was called John while John was there,

that love was called Mary while Mary was there,

that love would stay with me, like with many trees,

once they’d dug her up in a hurry,

a kiss-ridden and equally dead corpse,

dead after all the kissing.

Feeling empty, unfurnished, Mary in vain,

repentant for being strictly mortal,

she who, despite being a sturdy and handsome creature,

was a homebird, so deep-feeling

that her living realm remained far off from her beating heart.

Through the window,

the afternoon that played away amid a clump of carob trees

became suddenly dispersed

by gusts of wind, speaking arms,

arresting a woman found to be unlawfully unhappy,

all of her and a lover,

to then become a shattered image in revolutionary times

under a tirade of personal stoning from universal justice.

Mary, who was not a window girl,

but was a woman possessing a body you’d want, a heart you’d want,

peered through her shutters of let’s-look-and-choose

while still knowing, with a town heart as much as a woman’s,

that a squadron of impassioned men

do not have the power of the woodland’s cunning

over the state of time and mystery

that lonely John has, and John alone

free of any need, like the green blade of the earth’s grass,

that homely and yet universal green

that at first points towards the sky’s ascension,

and directly slumps to wilted brown in submission to you and the many,

where it lives in peace, not in tranquillity,

that negotiable sky of the living word and our common table,

a strictly imagined sky, yet a sky reimagined every day

for that window belonging to Mary and to Magdalene,

who, at times all on her own,

at times with vibrant dresses to be taken off,

undertook the journey before our living God,

stark naked on earth as she was in the apartments of Jerusalem,

a city where incense is always burning,

where the throats of many a bull are cut on the Lord’s altar

and where God’s prophets are murdered,

looking, however, to do this by civil means:

instead of killing them, they had them killed,

they created a loop and hid there: the law.

Instead of killing them, they had the law do it, Mary.

On the other side of the window,

on the other side of Mary between four walls,

that preside over the same woman and a different John,

who never manages to become John of the world;

behind Mary’s two eyes,

who at that time did not say it,

because no one would tell her,

was the squadron of men of the law,

who made law and love with nigh on the same spite,

with a shove they threw Mary of the dyer’s house

out on the ground, and it was the same ground as the dust on the street.

Behind Mary’s two eyes,

Mary was thrown before the feet of a fresh-faced boy,

whose name was Jesus, and Jesus he was, that is him alright!

John who was searching for his wild yet homebound heart

but he already had it, but only directions, gone amiss

among all the sinful Johns of good faith, impassioned Johns,

walked at sunset, always at sunset,

through the triumphant archway but without any triumph in his heart.

Mary who so loved to love and only that,

could not be disloyal, like the other one,

as she had just been found

with a love that she held but was not hers,

poor law, love of the poor!

Mary felt she could not even be stoned to death,

for she was so dead, she was once in the cave of the spirit,

the cave where a cooped-up woman

died for the chance and mystery to live: she loved,

on occasion, like a woman, often as a female,

one time she performed incredibly long hours as Mary;

and, instead of a woman, she grew old:

a popular image to be kissed,

not alive but was still there,

a woman who, at the close of every day,

was imprinted à la Veronica, her negative on a dish towel.

But, suddenly, having seen the lawful men,

starting with the oldest, a walking callus from the shame

of their hidden, honourable, and opportune circumcision,

they all walked with shame between their legs,

as they saw there, with the lucidity of a tribunal judging their own crucifixion,

Mary, as if she’d found a corpse,

and found out that life could be a lie;

Mary, as if she’d fallen in love,

that life is such a wholesome existence,

comprised of forgiving,

and providing for oneself.

Like this fresh-faced boy,

who said at a woman’s tremor like a lowered flag:

“I do not condemn you either.

Go forth and do not sin again.”

And Mary’s nature began to cry,

like a cave of divinity

whose ceiling drips for itself and out of sight.

And Mary broke out in tears according to her nature,

knowing and not knowing why,

nothing at all and ashamedly, something to do with love,

strictly because she could see and feel it all so clearly.

She, whose profession was to kiss the men of Jerusalem,

loved that boy who forgave her,

and who gifted what he could give, forgiveness.

And out of sheltered complexion,

from her bed and woodland complexion,

but saved, corrected, augmented,

augmented out of vital urgency, instead of biological urgency,

she kissed his foot and ankle,

so resistant to tenderness and sticks out,

she kissed his foot and ankle, and they were God’s, my girl.

And God, out of greatness, let Himself be kissed by Mary,

like He, as a boy, would receive the kisses of his mother Mary.

God was informed by this feeling,

and historically, he had been kissed,

after all the millions of years of rearing man,

it had always been a man and a woman.

He saved nature in love for nature itself,

as action worked through Him but always meticulously and vigorously from high on:

On Earth as it is in Heaven.

As she was saved on that cross

from Jesus’ agony among thieves,

and Jesus upright and Mary tearful,

the situation now redeemed

for those who must love for they were born,

for those who know nothing else but to seek out love,

always far and near, always between these two distances.

The church was founded by sinners, the deeply poor,

a mystery of the faith,

a church of worms who understand God’s meticulous way,

a mystery of the faith,

between Jesus and the mercifully deep sinner,

one whose height is greater than his stature

one who often shatters his cup for he does not know the way to the fountain.

Mary, if you still had not known that that torment was God’s, what then?

Mary, what if you had fallen

for the most masculine flower of creation,

because in your heart it seemed divine?

Mary, what if, facing the living masses of the citadel and the faithful,

you had to live out a ceaseless case of nymphomania?

And what if, Mary, if you do not mind

compromising your civil and diocesan honour before Jesus,

with you woodland and commercial hair,

a living headdress to the history of salvation,

your contribution talked of criminal languages whose aesthetic worked against Him

that moved like a civil servant’s plume

at any official ministry strictly related to foreign affairs?

What then, girl? What if, Eve Mary Magdalene,

if through your courage,

through your miraculous recovery from fear,

we knew as if practically God;

if there were a pure boy and not at all perplexed by the law

as loving is as a high function as letting yourself be loved,

as to embrace Him is to embrace the Father,

regardless of whether he knows it or just feels destined to it,

partner in life, affiliate of the heart, and rival to the world?

And what if, Mary, you did not know

that through Jesus and you,

God directly received the tear-stained sacrament,

the sacrament of our knees on the ground,

the sacrament of Man’s lips with feminine sex,

the sacrament of our entrails

in repent for

being so strictly individual,

for not having always recognised, Mary, Mary,

that one thing is love translated by lust

and an other, love translated by humility,

because humility is eternity?

And, seeming as you are a worm that loved and believed

that a believing worm is the only temple

where God can declare Himself creator of love and home,

far from an imperial being, your strictly young self

managed, one early Sunday morning,

to make a recently resurrected Jesus,

but still standing between glory and the common,

feel, Mary, feel as if you did not know him,

had mistaken him for owner of the vegetable garden

where just last Friday,

at sunset, you had hastily buried him.

Because, showing that you knew him, and many of us know,

he called you “Mary!”

and, in the way he called your name, in the tone of your name,

you knew, you knew the tone in your name,

because you remembered how he’d say “Mary”

as you’d look deeply into his eyes

that gave profound importance to

the mystery in certain people who have seen him clear as day

but fall tearfully silent as they have the heart and tongue of a disciple.

i mai no ho has pres com un manament.

I, si no saps què passarà,
s'hi passa gana, solitud, intel·ligència,
injustícia, calúmnia, filosofia i lletres.

en un invisible incendi de les capacitats de patir;
Si res no et passa,

I no parlis gaire;

No t'he salvat amb paraules.
Mira com t'he redimit: era pobre com ser normal;
i, guardant-los per al meu Déu, vaig redimir els divuit anys del món;
vaig deixar els pares, l'ofici, el poble;
res dins aquesta butxaca, res dins l'altra,

i caminaven.
i donava arbres als seus ulls.
Em topava amb un cos mort,
li donava vida meva i l'aixecava de bell nou

i la lluita t'ho revelerà tot,
sobretot si el resultat és net,
és a dir, si hi fracasses.
¿O no saps que, en la lluita,
el fracàs és el fracàs de l'èxit i no el de l'home?

Si no deixer de ser pobre,
seràs sempre superior al món i al poder,
i endemés es veurà.

Lluita, si pots, i, si no pots, batalla

Christ of Port-Royal

angleščina

I do not feel cheated because death is inevitable,

but rather because it’s to be expected.

Can’t you see I gave my blood

so that you may obey the command to live without fear?

Before telling you “To love one another,”

especially before saying “I shall build my Church,”

countless times I said, “do not be afraid,”

and you never took it to be another commandment.

The first commandment is: do not be afraid. Fear is for animals.

With the passing days, may your body seem less and less like an animal’s.

If you are afraid, it’s because you do not know what will happen.

If you do not know what will happen,

it is because you have not yet chosen between calculating the odds and me.

Mine are intelligent, awfully decided, and practical:

they know they shall pass where I have passed,

as this is the only path:

a path of hunger, solitude, intelligence,

injustice, slander, philosophy, and the arts.

Yet only on this narrow path can you speak clearly and firmly

to those who have turned my redemption into a career.

Look at me: convince yourself that those who wish to be chosen are few.

Watch as I give my blood

in an invisible fire of our capacity for suffering.

And compare it to the great narratives of the doctors in me.

Everything is possible,

except for standing publicly on my side

without anything happening to you.

If nothing happens to you,

it is because in your life you follow prudency, philosophy, the arts.

Look at me: you shall see that peace has nothing to do with tranquillity.

Do not speak too much:

act on behalf of everyone else,

take their place if, still living, theirs is empty.

I did it, and my Father resurrected me.

Do not get stuck on the wording. I did not save you with words.

Look at how I redeemed you: I was poor and ordinary alike,

I performed simultaneously two tasks as difficult

as any that can be asked of a son: growing up and fulfilling my Father’s wishes.

I was eighteen years old, like you,

and, saving them for my God, I redeemed eighteen years for the earth:

at the age of thirty, when I knew about growing up,

emptiness, and the flower of a man between men,

I left my parents, my livelihood, my town:

nothing in this pocket, nothing in the other,

I walked along the roads

quite literally in God’s good grace, to show my face

and fight against evil, without ever explaining why.

I see you are not asking me

why I left behind evil without explanation.

In your silence lies the repent

as you know at the roots of it all how these

theological caverns were created in your left lung.

Tell Father Alfred Rubio that evil is a result of History,

and does not belong to mystery, and so I did not have to explain it.

I found some legs marked with polio by history,

I forgave them for their historic crimes,

and they walked.

A man came to me from stony vistas,

I forgave the stone its history

and I gave his gaze some trees.

I came across a dead body,

I gave him my life and he arose anew

and back to his divine duty of living,

and back to the mysterious times I am living,

to know myself by name,

often reluctantly so on my part,

because they had to see how I was detained by the police.

What I mean to say is that evil can be explained by healing.

So do not waste any time or life

cynically looking for an explanation whose answer you know but dare not speak.

Fight specifically against evil, wherever you find it,

and struggle shall reveal all,

especially if the result is neater,

or better put, if you fail.

Or did you not know that in struggle

failure is the failure of success and not of the man himself?

As long you stay poor,

you shall always be superior to the world and its power,

and furthermore, you shall see it.

The poor always instil fear, mystery around themselves,

the poor are quite literally an apparition, like ghosts,

and this is my doing.

Let me appear then.

You know well enough that you are my passport.

No. Do not tell me about your personal sins,

as from up on this cross the only sins belong to the world.

Fight, if you can, battle on

against this impotency that tells you what you can do.

a dins la meva veu tràgica i emmatada,
on em dissimularen darrere una sotana.

invasores i verdes, els set dons m’inundaven;
i els confessors d’estiu, d’ull llimat i nas àvid,

Deu anys vaig esser un home estès i emblanquinat.
Cada dia la meva existència cridava;

Recordava.

He estimat com un segle d’homes imperiosos.

amb la seva pau franca de casa emblanquinada;
i l’Espanya nervuda de d’Otero, Goytisolo,

Self Portrait

angleščina

The frown on my thirtieth birthday came from a boy by a window

in Santanyí, 74 Palma Road.

My father was a horse-breeder and every night he’d bring me

a bitter rabbit, cut open and its stomach full of grass.

They raised me bitter, like juniper powder,

my head high and rugged, like a goat’s.

It wasn’t leather they used to mark my ribs,

but soon their words would grind my frown into dust.

I knew sin before the sea.

A girl cried between a house wall

and her knees, before I became a tall boy

who learnt, alone, his own body and its scented grammar.

When a cockerel cawed in the dawn

in my own tragic and rugged voice,

a third-class carriage brought me in black asylum,

where they hid me under a cassock.

October was thick with pastel shaded bananas

like the yellow-eared Latinists from across the water.

I was accompanied by Christ, my mother, a bag of

clothes and a vicar wearing perfumed alpaca hide.

In the academic year, the invasive

and green wonders, the seven gifts flooded me:

and the summer confessors, all slimy-eyed and greedy noses,

took a whiff of my young and tired she-wolf.

In the leopard-skin land of marshes and foxes,

that was to be my city throughout my bleak adolescence

I could not stand the fiery sun of life,

and my blood was to me but a tragic Camille.

For ten years I was a bed-ridden and pale man.

Every day my existence cried out to me;

and ten years of slumbering on a deep-feeling heart

made my body an instrument to my very human soul.

Under my transparent skin Christ could be seen,

like a dead dog, his presence lit up.

I clambered onto the rooftop and observed

the church tower, the green bell. I remembered.

The forever avid God burns in me, who crowns with thorns

the skin of ideas, the avid God whose fists

He drives into the wood, the closed God who turns the other

unoffended cheek, but never His face.

I lacked both my daily and nightly bread,

my shoes, a hearth, a house number,

but never pain nor God, nor the pangs of hunger

from being good like the sea and the ropes of the boats.

The wheel that grinds the bones of my knees and elbows

and poisons the drinking cup of verse

is the unsatiable rain of natural love

and the churlishness of a lion that comes from being a Catalan in Spain.

I have loved like a century of imperial men.

Every bloody blow has revealed a face

with its own name, a heap of cards, a portrait

and the lively sea to forget it all because it no longer mattered.

Loyalty, as straight as a skeleton, forges

my youth with this commanding tongue of mine,

yet I’d slash my elbows to think

that they’d never hear me, all these men of Spain.

I’d summon up my noble Iberian joy,

the secrets running in the marrow of our bones, three lions of the soul,

so that peace may strike down on this

childless and forever angered land.

I accept the open Spain of Josep Pla, Azorín,

with his honest peace from the white-washed house.

And the hard-nerved Spain of Otero, Goytisolo,

Josep Espinàs, Espriu and Sagarra.

Now, before the strike of 5 o’clock on this August morning,

from the steel of Montnegre and ample light of Breda,

I accept the scandal in my masculine pain,

as the sun rises before this white sheet of paper.

Jo no he tret espiga; només herba, Senyor.

Lord my companion

angleščina

I am your drooling dog,

my hounding is bitter slobber.

From the muck of the Earth, my voice like a little dove’s,

a sea dove wounded by hunters.

My hands have not sung,

I am in the dark like a heap of chaff,

and my memory crunches like footsteps on a tangle of rough Greenbriar.

I have not yielded any wheat, only grass, my Lord.

I sing to you like an arena covered in bishop’s weed.

But despite the quaking of my beetle-infested trunk,

every dawn, every day, every moon,

the flame of Your love burns brighter,

which in turn becomes my love, Lord.

My malaises glow like phosphorescent sheaves of barley,

and it is love I bare on my brow like a novice bell clapper.

And You, my Lord, before my charred bones,

before my rancid flesh like rotten bread,

remain my faithful hound,

licking at these wounds of mine, its drool clear,

they sing of the mercy in your lick.

Lamentation

Do not cut away the growths from my pain.

Leave my mouth to fill with wormwood.

Reap my bells of ancient glory

and the harvested flutes of the air.

Shed my burnt skin

of this fine white linen.

May I rest, an outstretched corpse turned to stone,

on the long hard stillness of the altar.

I cannot speak, so inflamed is my mouth

-an urn to the setting West, saffron flowers-

from gulping down my Beloved’s

bequeathment: a white moon in her sky…

Exili(s)

Exile(s)

angleščina

I know we could flee,

but do not believe it would be better elsewhere.

There would be rats, thick woodlands

that never let in the light,

with trees bearing the names

of the people who came to hang themselves,

and the silence…

This silence

amplifying memory into a gasp,

echoing invisible like an omen.

I know we could flee,

but their screams would follow us,

those of our forlorn shadows.

And I do not believe that would sit well

with the new neighbours.

i m’assenyalaves la fotografia
si aquest lloc fantasmagòric on sempre em portaves

Tampoc no sabia res

L’amor
només podia sorgir d’aquest abisme endimoniat
cridant-me amb veu profunda,
que el negre em xuclava i eres tu,
entrellum al fons, penetrant la meva devastació,
abraçant-me les tremolors,
sense remei ni conjur, i jo m’hi donava,

Pasifae

angleščina

I knew nothing about that dusk-lit shore,

nor its resting seagulls,

nor the fatigue webbed over your eyes

as you would dye my saliva coffee-black,

and pointed out the photograph to me

as if we were but one

and we could tuck ourselves away in the belly of the ox,

as if we could disappear forever.

I knew nothing about the man by the breakwater,

nor if his face was hooded at night,

nor if he stared into the sea’s mirror in search of salvation,

if he pondered over the water-strewn stars

out of fear or nostalgia and, above all,

if this phantasmagorical place where you’d always bring me

had anything to do with what was to befall us.

Neither was I aware

of the sand tangled in your hair

when you’d come back in the dark,

and I’d lick off the salt leaving small trails across your body

so as not to get lost, so as not to forget to return,

and my gums became enflamed

such did I bite myself in angst or pleasure

of a blood that was also yours,

and I’d speak to you of dying presences,

madly seeking each other out

in the outskirts of outlaw cities

in countries that no longer exist,

the only place where love could be founded anew,

and take root in outright malaise, barren and bombed out,

the earth turned to dust from demolished buildings

and young people whose eyes remain lost in fog

untrusting of words like destiny or survival.

Love

could only ever surge from the depths of this demonic abyss

bellowing out to me,

the darkness drained me and it was you,

half lit in the distance, penetrating my devastation,

hugging my trembling self,

without remedies or chants, I gave way,

I cast myself into the void of dementia,

to a welcoming place, to the warmth of the tornado

and sweating like two beasts

as love is not docile nor can it be tamed, I’d tell you,

how love stabs, hurts, wounds,

and I saw your matrix pulse in primal stirring,

when, suddenly, the whole beach turned yellow

and Death felt panicked for the first time.

Ultranegre

He anat a escopir a Santa Úrsula
però no hi he trobat els captaires.
Només les ombres,
les tenebres d’un Caravaggio decapitat
i l’arc apuntant-me a la cicatriu
que sempre he volgut amagar.

—Que no deixa de supurar aquesta textura
viscosa com si fos l’única cosa real, com si fos
l’única demostració putrefacta d’allò que vam
                ser.

Quantes mentides pots amortallar, Incendi?
Quants ganivets has pogut
amagar entre la palla? I enmig de la roba?

                         No t’avergonyeixis de res.

Tens dues ànimes enfrontades
i un cos preciós per destruir.

Ultrablack

angleščina

Writing to you, from this place, is hard,

here in this smoke-shrouded silence.

Amidst the wailing

from all those migrant detainment centres

that are taking root inside of me, bursting my eardrums

without a single whimper passing my lips.

Soulages is everywhere,

and this ultrablackness has become

our way of living.

Out through the night.

Out through the pain tied to

our skin, and out it juts.

Can you hear the tremors?

Vibrations expanding all around the room,

around the city…

I went to spit on Saint Ursula

but I did not find the beggars there.

Only their shadows,

the gloom found in one of Caravaggio’s beheadings

and the bow aiming at the scar

I’d always hoped to keep hidden.

It simply will not stop weeping, this viscous

surface as if it were the only thing that was real anymore,

as if it were the sole rotten proof of what we chose

to be.

How many lies can you enshroud, Fire?

For how long shall you cling to this desire for salvation

while calling it love? How many knives

have you stashed in the hay? Or under your clothes?

Be ashamed of nothing.

You have two opposing souls

and a beautiful body to massacre.

Barcelona Calamitat

Molt abans
que ens haguéssim de tapar els braços.
Del desig degotejant en el blanc
i dibuixant formes estranyes,
com un crit ofegat pel dolor,
com quasi una paraula.

Molt abans
de reconèixer que només som això:
aquest estat que avança, lentament,
cap a la seva descomposició,
cap a la seva podridura.

Batega l’esqueix i brolla,
com un trau de sang,
com qui expulsa una vida.

       No ploris.

Ho vam prometre.

Vam prometre’ns que nosaltres mai cap nom:
Barcelona Calamitat.

Calamity Barcelona

angleščina

So you have ignored what Hu Bo wanted to tell us,
but in every graveyard, in every city,
there are the outskirts and children are playing there absent.
We could come back here:
with the storm at our knees,
with grandma’s cries from up on the balcony,
abandon this bleakness.

Long before
the sea transformed into this kitchen foil,
no lighthouse nor chance to flee,
long before the angst-producing neon lights
on the red and hole-ridden walls,
long before the muddy smoke we inspired, out of desperation,
as if lapping up a tear.

Long before
we were forced to cover up our arms.
Desire dripping onto park benches
and drawing strange shapes,
a stifled cry of pain,
as if verging on a word.

Long before
the acceptance that this is all we are:
this body edging forward, but slowly,
towards its undoing,
towards the rot.

No tears, now.

It is not true that within every scar
there lies, imprisoned, a love.
That we are no more than a wound
-or that mirth is the absence of tears,
the impossibility of loving oneself in the void,
temptation of a suicide.

There is nothing else other than this collapse.
Than this drawn-out transformation of the places that have witnessed us grow,
open fields and police checkpoints.
A body dilating us.

There is nothing else
other than this poem dying on my lips.

There you will find it, where all metro lines terminate,
there at the mouth where our people’s dreams flow out,
there when that day you cried on the streets of Bilbao amidst Pasaia’s harbour sky
and all the sprinklers let spray at once.

We promised ourselves
not to take a name.
We shall never take a name:
Calamity Barcelona.

Beirut

katalonščina | David Caño

Si hem de morir que sigui aquí,
entre els vermells i les olors,
lluny de la lírica,
amb els genolls regalimant
pel terra brut, els cops al mur,
el Daily Express,
les envestides.

Si hem de morir que sigui aquí,
en aquest búnquer xuclador,
devorant ànsia
a cos obert, dansa macabra
de la vida que ens fa nosa,
i se’ns en fot el bombardeig,
la sang al mar, la puta sida.

Si hem de morir que sigui aquí:
ja pot plorar, la poesia.

angleščina

If we must die, let it be here,
betwixt the reds and odours,
far-flung from the lyrical,
our knees streaming
across the dirt, pounding fists against the wall,
the Daily Express,
the charges.

If we must die, let it be here,
in this vampire bunker,
angst devouring
open flesh, a macabre dance
of a life that peeves us,
we do not care about the bombs,
the sanguine sea, bloody AIDS.

If we must die, let it be here:
and only then
may she cry, poetry.

Era molt difícil eliminar totes les ombres

katalonščina | David Caño

Era molt difícil eliminar totes les ombres,

                                                    els clarobscurs,
                                                    els angles morts,
                                                    les zones fosques.

La nostra història
tenia la bellesa del fang,
l’olor de la infantesa,
entre Montjuïc i la Zona Franca
com de l’oblit al silenci,
del polsim a la destrucció.

La Llibertat anava descalça.

Eres la navalla i la llum.
Una mala nit.
Una mala addicció.
Eres el sexe.

Sexe fosc i descontrolat,
de carrer,
de cantonada
amb llum somorta,
morta
com la nostra filla,
que mai no va tenir
ni nom.

           El carrer del Malnom.

Més enllà del dolor.
A tocar del Dubte.

M’hi aturo.
M’hi perdo
T’hi veig.

Tota tu.
Tota arrel.
Tota estrangeria.
Tota record.

        Dessagnant-te

dins la blancor
d’aquesta carnisseria
islàmica.

Ja ho saps:

La nostàlgia
sempre hem de matar-la,
mirant a l’est.

It was hard work expulsing all those shadows

angleščina

It was hard work expulsing all those shadows,

that chiaroscuro,
those dead angles,
those dark zones.

Our history
was one of the beauty found in mud,
the scent of childhood,
between the mount of Montjuïc and the port of Zona Franca,
as forgetfulness turns to silence,
as clouds of dust turn to destruction.

Freedom, freedom trod barefoot.

You were the blade and the light,
A dark night.
A harmful addiction.
You were sex.

Dark and relentless sex
of the streets
and their corners
in deadpan light
dead
like our daughter,
who never even bore
a name.

Today I walk along Malnom street.

Beyond the pain.
The next door on from Doubt.

I lose myself there
I search for you there
I see you there.

All of you.
Every root.
Every strangeness.
Everything, memory.

                   Bleeding away
amidst the whiteness
of this Islamic
Butcher’s.

You know it:

Nostalgia, we must always
always
always kill it,
when looking to the East.

La llibertat

katalonščina | David Caño

La llibertat és un estat permanent
sense fronteres,
és oferir amor clandestí
com una droga
a plena llum del dia,
és no claudicar en l'intent,
és sincerar-te.

La llibertat és conviure
amb el desordre del desig
i no justificar-te,

on només podies donar voltes.

Freedom

angleščina

Freedom is a borderless
and permanent state,
it means offering up clandestine love
like a drug
in the light of day,
it means not giving up in the attempt,
it means staying true to oneself.

Freedom means cohabiting
with your desire in all its disarray
and not having to justify yourself,
it means blasphemy
and flight from the visionaries,
it means condemning yourself to the realm of the forgotten
in the eyes of your leaders,
it means lending dignity to words like
Subversion, Insurgency,
Self-Organisation.

Freedom means unveiling the myth
and toppling every single statue,
it means deleting, definitively so, this false friendship
with treachery,
it means besmirching the urge to control the mystic,
it means abolishing sin, our bad conscience,
our regrets of any perverted
morality, all drilled into you in gloomy schools,
palaces,
prisons,
             with great big concrete grounds
where you can only walk in circles.

Freedom is an empty hall,
a lame liar, a mute dictator,
rumba prancing around a bonfire,
the neighbour’s knickers waving like a flag,
                          black,
hung up on the line of dreams
fulfilled, of realised utopias,
of convictions that have ceased to flaunt,
of songs that have ceased to be anthems,
while the last of the mindsets rubs our feet
and helps us make supper...

Freedom, freedom means working little, very little and reading a lot,
it means putting down your book whenever you can,
it means removing the prefix from the word sexual,
it means love,
it means love
it means love, full stop.

It means discovering pleasure and strengthening that,
it means emancipating yourself from tedium,
it means leading a silly life,
a creative life, a never-ending sense of hesitation
the abolition of all condemnation.

And you? And you?
And what about you? What is this colour
you call freedom?

de sabó d’oli i sosa
aclarint el roig
retornant al blanc
de llençol viu

la llibertat

mirant-te als ulls

[The following day after the word]

angleščina

the following day after the word
I clean up the stains, the blood,
the habit lit up by your headlight
the laundress who bred you
she passed her touch down to me
and fists dripping wet with soap and caustic soda,
drawing out the red, returning all to resplendent,
bedsheet white
all to embrace the written word again
the freedom to address you lovingly as thou
while staring into your eyes
and offering up my nakedness
to this most injured humanity.

[I shall marry these moribund days]

angleščina

I shall marry these moribund days -there shall be wounds –
the door will open -the brighter light-
and a shapeless face -an ember-
will leave our weeping drooped on the marble floor.
The meltdown, an assault, to remember:
is there anything beyond,
a dawn’s light,
to grab on to?

vellut que facin els dies molt més amples i les nits molt més brillants;

quan siguem just en el límit:

deixem-nos anar la mà.

[I’d say to you, my good friend]

angleščina

I’d say to you, my good friend,

that there is neither risk, nor death, nor life, not even a star on which we could melt
away the path we have made and plant anew those plane trees, plant anew those bougainvillea, plant anew with deepened roots and juicier velvety fruit to widen the days and brighten the nights;

but if there is neither risk, nor death, nor life, not even another ocean to wet our bodies and not drown, nor another sky to breath from and not come apart, listen well as I merely want to say to you:

hold on tight to this non-life and the constant drag up and down these roads, hold it tight and say, ‘come, come with me to depths of this glacier, till the gaping hole at the precipice, to the volcano’s opening, till the tip of that lightning bolt’. And once at the very edge:

let go of the other’s hand.

diré el cim on tot s’ajunta
mil glopades de lava i gel
com quan dibuixes estirada

com quan el foc enceta el fred.

[And when fire ignites the cold]

angleščina

And when fire ignites the cold
I’ll speak to you of what has to die, where is the space
where is the space if it is habitable
I’ll speak of the valley, I’ll speak of the curve
            where this curve must end
I’ll speak of the horse, if it has blood
if this sea wants more water
I’ll speak of the sea, if it wants more water
I’ll speak of the darkness in the shade
of its snow, and of its sun
I’ll speak of the peak where everything joins up
I’ll speak of the fungus on your lip
if the fungus clamps on to your lip

[Conduíem sota la pluja]

katalonščina | Pol Guasch

Conduíem sota la pluja,
de nit, tornàvem no sé d’on
encara — l’autopista era
un riu, dèiem: aquest camí
no ens durà enlloc. Sobtadament
des d’on tot ho vèiem: el lloc
exacte en què neix la descàrrega,
aquell angle del núvol que
crea la matèria informe.
Teníem el xassís vibrant d’electre,
el tro, el llamp, un crit enmig
la fosca de la nit, el groc
mig resseguint les vies mortes,
deixant de rastre pols lumínica
pel riu, tenyint-lo tot daurat,
ens dèiem: aquest camí no
ens durà enlloc.

[We drove in the rain]

angleščina

We drove in the rain,
it was night, coming back from
I don’t remember where – the motorway
was a river, we said: this road
won’t lead us anywhere. Suddenly
a belting thunder blinded us
with in its sound,
then the flash of lightning.
We gathered our bearings on an altar
from where we spied everything: the precise point
where the discharge was born,
the angle on the cloud that
created this shapeless matter.
The chassis pulsing electric,
the thunder, the lightning, a cry in the midst
of the dark night, its yellowness
partly following the dead roads,
leaving particles of light
drifting along the river, dying it gold,
we said: this path
won’t lead us anywhere.

[Tinc no només els secrets]

katalonščina | Pol Guasch

Tinc no només els secrets
que guardo al puny clos
des que vaig veure’t, sinó
també les sagetes preparades,
just sospeses entre l’aire,
congelades, apuntant-te;
també els dits gastats
d’assenyalar-te sempre
—que sempre és massa—
d’assenyalar-te el camí
que jo no vull i sempre
agafes —millor la daga
que el naufragi, vares
dir-me, però ni de talls
ni de marees puc parlar-te—,
i fuges camí enllà,
només secrets que guardo
al puny —ja no et serveixen—,
inhàbils, les sagetes cauen a terra,
i veig com te’n vas,
i lentament faig cloure
l’altre puny, com si em guardés
algun secret que ja no tinc
per oferir-te, ara que
marxes.

I have kept not only secrets

angleščina

I have kept not only secrets
in my closed fist since
I last saw you, but also
readied arrows,
suspended in air,
frozen, aimed at you;
and worn out fingers
from always having to point at you
- always is too much-
from showing you the path
that I do not wish to take
but you always do – better the dagger
than a shipwreck, you once
told me, but I am no more able to talk
about cuts than ocean tides -,
so you flee up the path,
only secrets held in my
fist – they are no longer any good to you –
useless, the arrows fall to the floor,
I watch you as you go,
and slowly I squeeze
my other fist, as if I were hiding
some other secret that is not mine
to offer you, now that you are
leaving.

When I go for a stroll at night,
I carry the flame tucked in my chest
that guides me like a lantern,

a green leaf, perennial,
the path I did not write.
And the voice that utters: let’s talk.

inquietament.

[There is]

angleščina

There is
a way to go about things that supersedes
our very own manner of pointing out
the voids left in the wake of those objects we have made
disappear. There is the architecture to the very air
a mole mines for itself underground. And the blindness
with which it opens unknown paths.
And so we could also point out those things
while they are still in fact there:
with the same luck of a woodworm,
which has managed, restlessly,
to render useless an entire piece of Furniture.

Avui a l’ordinador
M´han sortit lletres estranyes

Sembla que mentre dormia
l’Spiderman i la bruixa

i quin sarau hi han armat.
si l’ordinador no em deixa esborrar aquell jeroglífic,
hauré d’escriure’l a mà.

The Computer

angleščina

Today on the computer
some strange letters appeared
and signs I had never seen before
and when I tried to write there
I couldn’t find any space at all.
It seems that as I slept
Spiderman and the witch
along with Doraemon had all come in,
not forgetting the twins and Potter
and what a rumpus they stirred up!
I hoped to write a story for Saint George’s
which we are celebrating tomorrow at school,
and if the computer shan’t let me erase these hieroglyphics
hand and pen shall be my tools.

l’han deixada de racó:
és massa polida i blanca
i la volen de color.
Uns pantalons nous de trinca
també estan arraconats,
que els texans ara són moda
descolorits i gastats.

-Què farem -diu la camisa-
per poder-nos valorar?
-T’esquitxaré de pintura!
-El llexiu t’aclarirà!

Com dos bons amics s’ajuden,
“jo per tu i tu per mi”.

Ara ja els veuran de moda
I els trauran a presumir.

New and Old

angleščina

It is a new shirt;
They’ve left abandoned in the corner:
so white and bright
but they want to see come colour.
A pair of brand new trousers,
also shoved away,
now that jeans are all the rage,
and the more washed out and used the better.

“What ever should we do?” says the shirt,
“so we may be of value?”
“I’ll squirt you with paint!”
“The bleach shall brighten you!”

As good friends help each other out,
“I scratch you and you scratch me.”

Soon you’ll see them back in fashion,
flaunting the streets with glee.

The Shimmering Star

angleščina

Les paraules

katalonščina | Joana Raspall

Si al bosc tinguéssim set,
quina font buscaríem?
La de l’aigua més clara,
més viva i més brillant.
I de l’arbre fruiter,
quina peça voldríem?
La més madura i dolça,
Suau al paladar.
I quin ramell de flors
a l’amor donaríem?
El de colors més bells,
més fresc i perfumat.
Per als amics i amigues,
¿no triarem paraules
entre les més boniques
que al món s’han inventat?

No volem l’aigua bruta,
ni la fruita tarada,
ni fer rams d’esbarzers...

i no pas mots grollers.

The Words

angleščina

Should we find ourselves thirsty in the woods,
which fount would we look for?
The one with the cleanest water,
alive and gleaming.
And from the fruiting tree,
which piece would we like?
The ripest and sweetest,
soft on the palate.
And what bunch of flowers
should we give to love?
The one with the prettiest colours,
the freshest and most perfumed.
Friends one and all:
should we not choose our words
from among the most beautiful
to have been invented in this world?

We neither care for dirty water,
nor spoilt fruit,
nor making bouquets from brambles…
and in our chatter
we want beautiful words
and not coarse-tongued grumbles.

La pedreta

katalonščina | Joana Raspall

Tinc una pedreta blanca
sobre el palmell de la mà.
Que coses deuria dir-me,
si entengués el seu parlar!
Deu sentir-se forastera
entre els terrossos del camp;
potser ve de roques altes
destrossades per un llamp,
i les aigües de neu fosa
l’han arrosegada aquí.
No sé si per ella és vida,
haver-se trobat amb mi.
Per mi és una trobada
que no sé com valorar.
La veig tan polida i neta...
No la gosaré llençar.

The pebble

angleščina

I have a white pebble
on the palm of my hand.
Such secrets it could tell me,
if only I could understand!
It must feel like an outsider
amongst the field’s clods of earth;
perhaps it comes from higher terrain
splintered by lightning,
and the waters from the thawed snow
have dragged it down this way.
I cannot know if this is the life it wants,
having come all this way.
This is a perchance meeting
whose value I cannot say.
Yet, it seems so clean and brightly polished…
I dare not throw it away.

La bruixa revellida

katalonščina | Joana Raspall

Una bruixa revellida,
Seca com un escardot,
Ja no sap moure l’escombra;
Prova de volar i no pot.

Veu ocells i papallones
que voleien entre flors...
ella, en lloc de tenir ales,
només té la pell i l’os.
Pensa, amb ràbia, que de jove
dominava el bosc i el prat
i per maldat o caprici
tot ho deixava embruixat.
Ara ja ni gosa riure;
la veurien sense dents
i ja no la temerien
ni fugirien corrents;
-potser i tot l’empaitarien!-

S’amagarà en la foscor,
lluny d’ocells i papallones.
Ara és ella, qui té por!

Invitació 2

katalonščina | Joana Raspall

Amic, vols venir?
La tarda és molt clara
l’aire té sentors
de mar i muntanya.
Fugim del soroll
i busquem la calma
on compartirem
les nostres paraules.
Poques en direm
i ben escoltades,
amb pau dins del cor,
llum en les mirades.

Vols venir amic?
La tarda és tan clara!

Invitation 2

angleščina

Friend, do you want to come?
It is a clear afternoon
and the air is carrying scents
from seashore to mountain.
Let’s flee this noise
and seek out the calm
where we may share
our words.
Few shall be exchanged
albeit well heard,
with peace in our hearts,
and light in our gaze.

Do you want to come, friend?
It is such a clear afternoon!

Invitation 1

If you like reading
my world shall keep you company
and we can share them between us.

Instant d'èxtasi

katalonščina | Joana Raspall

Estimar l’aigua
que riu i plora,
i, alhora,
la fresca molsa,
i la veu dolça
que sap cantar...
estimar l’aire
que s’esgarrinxa
per les alzines
de punxes fines...
és com resar.

Moment of Extasy

angleščina

Loving the water
that laughs and cries
and, also,
fresh moss,
the sweet voice
that knows how to sing…
loving the air
rustling through
the knotted trees
with their fines prickles…
is like prayer.

Enemigues

katalonščina | Joana Raspall

La pilota i la sabata
fa temps què són enemigues.
No voldrien jugar juntes
i sempre hi ha de jugar.
L’una rep les patacades,
l’altra malmet la puntera;

-Hola, pilota aixafada!
-Hola, sabata esbotzada!
-Fa molt de temps que no et veia;
no tens ganes de jugar?
-Prou que ho faria sabata,
si aconseguien inflar-me;
però i tu?
-Jo no puc moure’m
sense el peu que em fa xutar.
Han callat. Semblen amigues;
no en treuran res de renyir.

Al pas del temps, les baralles
sovint acaben així.

Enemies

angleščina

The ball and the shoe
have been enemies for quite some time.
They do not want to play together
and one or the other is always there for just that.
One is always getting kicked,
and the other’s toecap keeps getting bent.
There aren´t any other games left for them, however,
than this constant bounce and kick.

In life everything comes to an end…
and the moment arrives when they grow old.
After being left abandoned
in some dusty corner,
they reunite in the binman’s lorry,
last station: the tip.
-Hello, squashed ball!
-Hello, knackered shoes!
-It’s been a long time since I last saw you;
do you feel like playing?
-Oh how I’d love to, shoe,
if only they could reinflate me;
and yourself?
-I can’t move myself
without my foot to help me shoot.
They fell silent. They could almost pass for friends;
nothing else left for them to fall out over.

Over the course of time, rivalries
usually come to this sort of end.

En Pol

katalonščina | Joana Raspall

És tant ample i vistós, l’aparador,
i tant il·luminades, les joguines,
que s’hi atura, fascinat, en Pol.
Quantes pilotes i construccions...
trens, bicicletes, dinosaures, nines...

Pol

angleščina

It’s so wide and delightful to look at, this shop window,
and they light up so brightly, these toys,
that young Pol, fascinated, stops and stares.
So many balls and buildings…
trains, bikes, dinosaurs, dolls…
and, my oh my, the sheer quantity of mystery boxes!
Perhaps they’re for a magic or puppet show
or disguises of heroes and fairies…

On top of a shelf, a teddy bear
has such spellbinding pupils for eyes, both large and black,
that they seem to be calling out; calling him over to play
close by to the doll with rosy cheeks
and long plaits beaming the sun’s hues.
He would quite happily play along!
yet his mother says he is now too old
to still be playing with bears and dolls.
-What does too old mean?- muses little Pol.

Pep

angleščina

Pep is blowing down his straw into his big boy’s cup
to blow the fine bubbles lathering in the play soap.
He hoped to surround himself by making one even larger
and so to make it bigger he blew even harder,
alas it did pop under the sun’s hot ray
and so he dropped to the floor,
in complete disarray.

El trobador

katalonščina | Joana Raspall

Penso fer-me trobador,
seguir terres i cantar
a les dames dels castells
que em volguessin escoltar.
Sé que no totes són belles
ni tenen cabells daurats
ni els ulls semblen estrelles
ni els llavis ben dibuixats.
...Alguna deu ser garrella,
i una altra, de cos neulit;
o tenir nas de patata,
ulls de peix o front pansit...
Aquestes, vull! Les boniques,
si escoltaven el meu cant,
no estarien tant contentes
ni m’ho agrairien tant.
Són les menys afavorides,
les fàcils d’acontentar;
volen creure que el cantaire
no les pretén enganyar.
Penso que em correspondrien
amb bon sou i tracte bo,
ja que al món no trobarien
millor cantaire que jo.

Em veuria de les dames
Ben rebut i ben pagat;
...i, de passada, els duria
Un bri de felicitat.

The Troubadour

angleščina

I have a plan to become a troubadour,
to travel across lands and sing
to all the maidens in castles
who would care to listen to me.
I know that not all are fair
nor bare golden hair
nor do their eyes shine like stars
or possess full and curvy lips.
…one may be bow-legged
and another, scrawny;
or have a potato for a nose,
fishy eyes or a shrunken forehead…
These are the ones I seek! Yet, the pretty ones,
should they listen to my song,
would not be so content
nor would they thank me so.
They are the least favoured,
the easy ones to please;
always wanting to believe that songbirds
are not out to fool them.
I think I would be received
with fair salary and fairer treatment,
as they shall never find a finer songbird
than I in this whole world.

I shall drink on the maidens’ coin,
well received and well paid;
…and, in passing, I should bring them
a touch of joy repaid.

Cirurgia

katalonščina | Joana Raspall

La papalloneta s’ha trencat una ala;
Et donaré un pètal que et pugui fer d’ala;
l’aranya té traça i te’l pot cosir.

Surgery

angleščina

The little butterfly has broken a wing;
it falls in shreds down to the foot of the rosebush.
“Ah, there is not a single doctor who can cure me!”
“breathe poor thing”. “And now, what should I do?”
“No crying, my friend” – a rose tells her,
the fairest and freshest in the garden – .
I shall give you a petal that works as a wing;
the spider has got an eye for these things and shall sew you up nicely.

The spider, wise and always willing to mend,
with the greatest of care is soon done with her work.
… and the little butterfly is soon swooping around
with a white wing on one side and a rose one on the other.

Cloud Dance

angleščina

I won’t ever understand why the clouds won’t sing
when, having handed themselves over to the fickle wind,
they start to unthread into gauze tape
in the seamless twirls of a slow waltz.

I listen to the silence as to the indecipherable
beat of pauses between violins…
I won’t ever understand why clouds should want to hide
the melodies that pulse within.

Tan bonic i tan negre

katalonščina | Blanca Llum Vidal

No li clavis les dents.
No li regalis la pau.
No li cantis la pena que tens
ni a la cara ni enlloc.
No li diguis finestres.
No li diguis t’espero.
No li diguis l’infern
ni exactament el contrari.
No li diguis que penses
que perquè no et deia res
pensaves que sí,
que es va invertir un precipici,
que es van engabiar molts ocells
i que un règim va caure.
No li piquis la porta.
No li doblis cervells.
No li vegis misteri.
No li assenyalis cavalls
ni un futur galopant.
No li mesuris el mal.
No li ensenyis quant pesa
el que dius i el que no.
No li donis verins.
No li donis ferides.
No li rimis dos verbs.
No li vinguis amb flors
que s’esclafen per viure.
No li esquerdis l’esquerda.
No li ballis fiblons.
i fes-ho distret, descarat,
descarnat i directe,
que l’amor prefixat
ni t’agrada ni no,
però que sempre t’ha fet
una mica de mandra.

So pretty, so black

angleščina

Do not bite him.
Do not give him any peace.
Do not serenade him with your woes
neither to his face nor anywhere.
Do not speak of windows.
Do not speak of waiting for him.
Do not speak of hellscapes
nor the exact opposite thereof.
Do not speak of your thinking
of why he did not say anything
when you thought he would,
or that a precipice had inverted,
or that many birds had been caged
and a regime had fallen in-between.
Do not knock on his door.
Do not overthink him.
Do not put out his fires.
Do not tie his knots for him.
Do not ask him if his fear has gone away
or has spread further than ever.
Do not see mystery in him.
Do not show him horses
or galloping futures.
Do not measure his wickedness.
Do not show him the weight
of your silence and your speech.
Do not give him poison.
Do not give him wounds to lick.
Do not rhyme his verbs for him.
Do not come knocking with flowers
that are pressed so as to live on.
Do not shatter his shards.
Do not spin his spurs.
Do not speak of the world
that shakes when he sees it.
Do not speak so much.
Do not speak of a sky
filled with flights and bullets
nor of such a pretty sky, such a black sky.
Do not overplay your thirst.
Do not remind him it is raining
nor if the rain is little
nor if the little one is death.
Just write to him
and discreetly so, cheekily so,
brutally and directly,
and say that you neither like nor dislike
love with a prefix,
but it has always seemed
a bit too much of a hassle.

Seré fina o abjecta, seré rude o subtil;
tant si faig o desfaig, no vindré a consolar-te:

em declaro deforme i he triat la patata.

The potato

angleščina

I have not given my heart and am neither cheap nor pricey.
Should it rot in my hands, what can I make anew?
In the loneliest of corners there is a misshapen potato
that teaches me how it sprouts, spins, and moves.

I will be dainty and abject, crude and subtle;
Well or under done, I shan’t come to console you:
I shan’t be what you hoped for in price or type,
as being a body or a crutch is both destructive and filling.

May they finally understand, relatives and gentlemen:
I can play at being the bird, fish, microbe or mule,
I can be the trembling earth and the waking hole of our fears,
but never the names you have ladened me with – neither face nor bum.

May fictions emerge around life,
that, in its rigidity, stifles and slaughters.
As you are all hell-bent on taking our measurements,
I declare myself misshapen and have chosen the potato.

te’n tornaràs sempre a muntanya,
sempre corrent, com la gasela.

Love of loves

angleščina

I yearn for you but only if you sing to sing
of us fleeing both lions and leopards,
of us crossing the gardens lined with walnut trees,
of our inner-eye mired in serenity,
and our outer-eye’s cold reason mired in dew,
of us watching, hearts on sleeves, for the vale’s green to renew,
of us spending the night at the old farmhouse
and at dawn, with the rising sun,
you’ll always run mountain-bound,
always bounding away, like a gazelle.

depèn de lo fonda que sigui.

Jafre

Gratar els camins i escurar el pot i entrar picant dos o tres cops.

Jafre

angleščina

It was the steppe, what you wanted. The dark and desolate steppe, what I wanted. Dry stone, the jagged rock, an earth bearing beastly eyes and a long tongue, what we wanted. A desert plane with a door. A frameless door or nought but air and border for a frame. A thief’s or a devil’s table along with hard bread and raw onion. Asking for a pot of honey when finished. Skirting along the road while scraping the pot and then walking right in having knocked two or three times. Befriending the white tiger; straggling along the bare mountain bone, peering at its skull and often so, and spurring the old donkey on with your elbow. Ringing common sense and then gifting it, for all its suffering, the silence of cowbells. It was the heart that shrunk as small as a hazelnut, proud necks with children slung around, the forest eery amidst the silence and the table wine with seguidillas. It was those hands, the black moon, and a human howling. It was the farmhouse, finding the fount, stalking the tomcat stalking the pussycat. It was lightning. Closing your fingers, seeking out the nymph and reading her phobia. It was split, enough for everyone, there were its prickles, pine branches pricking into our woolly hides, and a bird observing close-by as they twined in on us.

Som.

Som. Som el pont de ser pastors.
Som el vers que queda a l’aire...

Talaiot

angleščina

We are perfectly aware,
at heart, of the existence
of our skin and the poison as the arrow pierces,
of the quiver that is our very body,
of the pleasure pulsing between our legs
and the brain musing over the mountain scenery.

We are fully alive when we die.
We are fully figured when abstract.
We are fully realised when we cannot see ourselves.
We are. We are the stones’ adage.
We are hands striking flint.

We are perfectly aware,
and fully so, of the sheer breadth
of the waves and the vigour of the sea,
the tramontane’s draft,
the dinginess from within the cave
and the glaring sun outside.

We are fully ancient when no trace is left behind.
We are mouth and song made unseen.
We are. We are the bridge to shepherdship.
We are verse suspended mid-air.

has d’escoltar-te el defecte i esquerdar-te, si vols,

Bonfire

angleščina

Before the break of dawn you say, out of love for the brawl,
you’ll speak to them, those books, and with them, if you can,
of knife-slashes of light, but not of power or blood.

Before the break of dawn you say, out of spirit of the revolt,
that books are not for burning and that books, if you know anything,
are not even to be venerated, nor they shall they kneel to you.

Before the break of dawn you say, out of need to record it after,
you must listen to your defects and fracture, if you want to,
the most stable and upright of identities.

Before the break of dawn you will say that not even the falsest of prophets have their eyes burnt out,
That a land is not an anthem, that “we” is nothing at all, no,
That a land is its people, that a land is its books.

Before the break of dawn I’ll tell them, and I’ll be for you, my love, a sort of slingshot,
For what do they want these people who are burning before dawn’s break?

Raor de raó

katalonščina | Blanca Llum Vidal

Érem bocins de lluna morta
i no quèiem al pou, ens hi tiràvem.
Si no dormíem, que no dormíem,
decidíem tallar-nos amb destrals de raó.
Segats d’enmig, amb horitzons diferents
i desfets de maneres, no érem ni andrògins.
I a la follia, guardiana amiga,
Cavalca, infinita, cavalca, i sigues fang
sense costella i sigues pols sense principi.
I nosaltres pensant. I nosaltres petits,
però ocupant massa, recordàvem
la marca i no l’escàndol.
Tocàvem la crosta i oblidàvem
I alletàvem, això sí, alletàvem l’inici.
I a la raó: cavalca, infinita, cavalca, i sigues
tall, sí, sigues destral, però amb insurgència.
I el món va fer lloc a un cos petit.
I avesats a trencar-nos, va ser que no.

Edge of reason

angleščina

We were chunks of dead moon
But rather than fall, we threw ourselves down the well.
Were we not to sleep, and we did not sleep,
we would cut ourselves open with axes of reason.
Scythed in half, we then bore different horizons and were freed of old customs, rendered not even androgynous.
And madness, my guardian friend,
they turned her inside out: madder than mad,
so mad that, no, not even the mind could madden.
Ride on infinite madness, ride on, and be mud
without a rib and be dust without beginning.
But come night came betrayal: we opened the door to
her, and, go on then, go to her with your eyes open,
and we did dare to tell her all.
All the while we thought. And us so small,
but taking up so much room, we recalled
the brand but not the scandal.
We grazed the scab and forgot that underneath
lies not evil but a heart yearning to expand.
Had we wanted to heal, the remedy was quick,
so quick as not to be seen.
As such we tore ourselves apart: to unearth
the realisation that roots will not take to any land,
that no land can contain a known place.
Neither homeland nor forbidden land.
And at our breast we nursed, yes, nursed the beginning.
And to reason we say: ride on, infinite reason, ride on, and be the
blade, yes the axe, but an insurgent one.
And the world did make space for such a little body.
So used to breaking ourselves apart, yet it was not to be.
