Raša Livada was born in Subotica in 1948. He wrote only three collections of poems during his lifetime, but they determined the development of Serbian literature at the end of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st century. In 1985, he founded the Literary Society "Pismo" and started a magazine of the same name for contemporary world literature. Together with the "Pismo" edition, he founded magazines for Jewish, English, Dutch and Russian literature. Raša Livada was the Editor of the famous Anthology of World Poetry, published by Prosveta in 1983. In the early nineties, at the time of the collapse of Yugoslavia, he was the vice president of the Serbian PEN Center and the first president of the Committee for the Protection of Artistic Freedom. He died in Belgrade on November 6th, 2007.
