Natalya Gorbanevskaya was a Russian poet, translator and civil rights activist, who possed the citizenship of Poland. She graduated from Leningrad University, department of philology, in 1964 and worked as a technical editor and translator. Her poems since the early 1960-ies had a wide ciculation in ‘samizdat’, many of them were published abroad. Gorbanevskaya was an active participant of the Soviet "dissident movement," co-editor of "Chronicle of Current Events", a periodical that focused on human rights in the Soviet Union. In 1968 she was one of eight protesters to demonstrate in Red Square, Moscow against the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia and then was arrested and imprisoned in a Soviet psychiatric prison for two years. In 1975, Gorbanevskaya emigrated, and lived in Paris since. There she collaborated for years with leading editions of Russian emigration, 9 poetry collections appeared since 1969 in Germany, France and USA followed 11 collections and two books of selected poems published in Russia after 1996. Gorbanevskaya also published two collections of her translations from Polish poetry (especially Czesław Miłosz) and the documentary about 1968 Red Square demonstration and trial of its participants.
