Born in Gothenburg, Sweden, in 1960, Aris Fioretos was educated at Stockholm University, Ecoles des hautes études in Paris, and Yale University. He received his doctorate in 1991. In the same year, he was invited as a “fellow” to the Getty Center for the History of Art and Humanities in Santa Monica; in 1992–94, he was an assistant professor at Johns Hopkins University; thanks to a Alexander von Humboldt-Stiftung grant, he conducted research in Berlin in 1995; and in 1996, he was a visiting professor at the universities of Copenhagen and Oslo. In 1997, Fioretos visited Berlin anew, this time as a guest invited by the DAAD Künstlerprogramm. Since 1998, he lives and works in Stockholm.

Fioretos has published several books of prose and criticism. Since 1985, he is a frequent contributor of essays and criticism, but also of poetry and prose to journals and newspapers. A translator of Paul Auster, Jacques Derrida, Friedrich Hölderlin, and Vladimir Nabokov into Swedish, he is the editor of two multi-author volumes of critical essays in English.

Fioretos has received numerous grants, prizes, and rewards both in his native country and abroad.
