Mangesh Narayanrao Kale

Printer’s Devil

английский

Can’t guess what exactly is going on, bro

but what’s undeniable is that

I’m getting the print as a mirror image

for the last forty years

the machine’s been running fine

now and then a belt or bolt broke

at the most when a part or two went crazy

it was readily pulled out in good faith

wasn’t really in the habit of checking

the oil or the grease from time to time

even so the thing ran smooth and did the job

for a few years in between

it was rather noisy

but the ear had got used to it

the plate didn’t catch enough ink

and also became scummy

having escaped the eye

even then it printed without a hitch

so what’s wrong now, bro

that everything has begun showing

as a mirror image

I tried flipping the plate

but nothing changed

placing it the usual way

gives the same result

servicing oiling and whatever

I’ve tried it all but still

can’t guess what’s amiss

the machine runs fast

even the speed stays constant

the paper too remains intact

no matter the speed

but the letters are turned around

shutting down the press

was the last way out

but even this solution

has proven futile, bro

the thud-thud-thud of the machine

keeps ringing in the ear night and day

and the letters emerge all wrong

behind the spectacle lenses

I changed houses changed cities changed people

because of these flipped letters

but where’s the peace, bro

and today took the cake, bro

I opened the morning paper

and voilà

found it printed inside out

अट

Mangesh Narayanrao Kale

Deal

английский

He heaved his shadow

over his shoulder

and started walking

then his shadow heaved him

over its shoulder

and started walking

the deal between the two

is to keep talking

Whoever stops

will have his head smashed

into a thousand pieces

hanging the shadow on a tree

he could walk out of the situation

even then the talking wouldn’t stop

heaving the shadow over its shoulder

the tree will start walking

or the tree’s shadow

will heave the tree over its shoulder

the deal between the two

is to keep walking

Whoever stops

will have its head smashed

into a thousand pieces

possibly the tree will stop

after entrusting the shadow to the wind

even then the sequence won’t change

the shadow on its shoulder

the wind will keep rushing

or the shadow of the wind will heave

the wind over its shoulder

and both will keep rushing on for ever

in each other’s company

the deal between the two

is to keep rushing

Whoever stops

will have its head smashed

into a thousand pieces

the wind will stop for a while

 exhausted

the tree will have already stopped

it’ll keep moving ahead alone

still the journey won’t stop

the deal between the two

is to move ahead

Whoever doesn’t

will have its head smashed

into a thousand pieces

He heaved his shadow

over his shoulder

and started walking . . .

Mangesh Narayanrao Kale

A Writing Exercise

английский

You can’t write hare instead of tortoise

at the most you can make it run fast

and beat the hare in the race

you can’t write tortoise instead of hare

at the most you can make it sleep in the grass

and let the tortoise go forward

you can very much write monkey instead of man

which is to say after writing monkey

you inevitably need to write the additional tail

as it happens he builds bridges crosses the seven seas

burns Lanka down sacrifices his life

and wipes out the kingdom of the Ten-Headed Demon

each poet may have written the word man

in diverse ways   much like Valmiki did

or according to one’s own capacity

which is to say by writing monkey instead of man

one makes it convenient for other men

and gives the first man a synonym

the synonym demon that a poet gave man

has currency in the same sense in this century too

even after the monkey evolved into man

man is a monkey missing a tail

this hasn’t been written yet

although the tail vanished aeons ago

even now

you may write and read the word man

any which way you want

2

Anyone can write the word suicide

anyone being one who can scribble the first syllable

or can put a thumbprint if he’s illiterate

which is to say if a poet is a painter actor or acrobat

it’s a given that he’ll write in a calligraphic hand

he can be male female or even third gender

which is to say anyone just anyone can write

anyone born on this earth

whether a biped or a quadruped with eyes

which is to say suicide is the only word

that in order to be read doesn’t even

impose the condition of being literate

and these days all illiterate toilers who irrigate

the soil with their sweat have started

writing the word suicide in a stylish hand

which is to say these unlettered ones

have discovered a synonym for suicide

that never needs to be read or written

now the word suicide

can be written as farmer

3

Water is a word that can be drawn

out of a well a sea a river a stream a lake

or even from an earthen pot at home

how easy it was to write water

which is to say when a vessel was hung on the tap

it would fill up with the word water in half a second

dropping an arm’s length of rope in a well

or stopping by a river while returning from the field

a pot could be filled without any effort

the word water used to gurgle

anywhere anytime with no trouble

nothing difficult lay hidden behind water

there was no tramping miles and miles

no empty pail clanking the bottom of a dry well

the tap’s umbilical cord spread far hadn’t yet dried up

the word water has evaporated from the village

from the river from the well and even from the earthen pot

its initial letter itself has vanished

and just nobody can write it

in this century

Mangesh Narayanrao Kale

Only a Shape

английский

This hush is now a companion

and we took absolutely nothing

in fact the tailor hadn’t sewn

a pocket in which to carry things

the trousers had only the shape of a pocket

and we carried along

the shape of a banknote

sewn in the shape of a pocket

we have an eternal note

sewn in the shape of a pocket

that was never going to be spent

in fact the trousers didn’t have a pocket

the tailor has sewn

just a shape to the trousers

and inside that shape

hides the shape of a banknote

the shape of the note carries

the price of a thing that couldn’t be bought

just the shape of the price

hides within the shape of the note

for instance a brand new bicycle

is parked in the shape of a note

we have never bought the thing

let alone cycled it

just the shape of cycling

occupies the note and within that shape

hides a handful of happiness

never obtained

in the shape of a handful of happiness

we squandered around twenty-five years

which in fact slipped

from our hands unwittingly

the lost time is just a shape

and we are still standing

on the radius of age

where we never reached

in reality this is just our shape

that goes tumbling in front of us

2

Hush alone is the companion

and there are hands and feet

if a pair of hands causes

a pair of legs to walk

one can cross a village

we didn’t take the village along

we had beside us only the shape of the village

which the feet trod on unknowingly

until the next village arrived

If the shape of one village

is divided by another village

does the village remain after all?

which means two villages can have the same name

or they can resemble each other to the last grain

even their shadows can be the same

still the two villages always differ in some way

which means the shirt of this village

will never fit that village

3

We of course leave

home behind

and for company we have

the search for a new home

a house can be large or small

the roof can be thatched

or tiled or of corrugated tin

or beams or concrete

the legs of a house

are amputated

right after its birth

that’s why it stays put

the feet met so many houses

how footloose the legs were

Even after begging the house

did we ever get the shape of the house?

leaving home did we cry and beat our breast?

and did the feet ever get stuck at home in the beginning?

they must have lingered for two or four years at the most

the hands were always in a rush

two hands or two feet

really need a home

which slips again and again from our hands

and which we never arrive at till the very end

Tushar Dhawal

Papa, look

английский

Papa, look
the towers I saw in the yarns you spun
during my childhood
are collapsing
Those paths     now deserted
are devouring dust
The country you talked about
has vanished and its people
are scurrying here and there
We’ve stowed them within us
and now we too have turned
into those same towers
Papa, look
we are crumbling
Even now you are saying something
gazing somewhere far away into the sky
You are tranquil and full
of faith and hope
You’re certain that towers don’t collapse
You are moving forth on that same path
which is deserted and devouring dust
Papa, look
my chest is being crushed
Someone is hauling
the pulpy folds of the brain
with iron chains
from all sides
Something has happened somewhere
the news of which hasn’t yet reached me
and I am besieged by some scary surmise
How did I come here
Where are you
What country is this, Papa
about which you never told me anything
You didn’t even bring me here
then how as we walked on
did the body of the same path decay
How did its guise change
Who are these people
Where are you
I grope for the people of that country
who are stuffed within me
I scrape them and wake them
Someone say something
Tell me even if only to beguile me
that this is a dream
a film running on the mind’s screen
Let someone say on your behalf
that those towers don’t tumble down
Nothing happens to them
Those people never end
Console me, Papa

Tushar Dhawal

Now a Prophet

английский

Murder stains
no longer cling to his face.
He has blurred their shadows
with his radiance.
Enchanted, a throng advances
shouting slogans.
Hosannas, his prolonged progeny,
fall upon frogs having an orgy
in black rain.

He is the founder
of new religions, new scriptures,
of philosophies fitting inside his shirt,
and the regulator of the cosmos,
                                of power.

Finding solutions in new-fangled formulas
and showering flowers while flying across
the world in the Pushpak Viman named Brand,
a new nuisance, served on the platter, is here.

Now he is within you,
within me. We are one with him.
He is the new-century Alexander chanting
the name of the poor, flourishing
on their corpses.
He is the prophet
of moribund stars,
on which we live

but aren’t alive.

Mausi

английский

The waiting room
is full of faces that have
given up everything
The skin is oozing and
the ground has vanished
Hanging crooked in a funny way
a snowy wall clock frozen
from the beginning of time
moves its hand
shiver upon shiver

What platform is this?
asks an impassive faceless old man
and goes away
He doesn’t want to go anywhere
yet he asks apropos of nothing
smiles a crooked smile
and sends others from here
to somewhere far away

Right then a busy train
comes hurtling down
whistling its way
into the station
It is loaded with
blue impassive faces
lost in a stony swoon
and blue eyes staring
into a blue cipher
The blue train slides away
over the blue tracks
in the blue cold

Panting and puffing
I reach the waiting room
What platform is this? he asks
and goes away snickering
into the blue fog
There is no ground to stand upon…
The waiting room is empty
Putting on a blue face
you’ve gone on that busy train
I am calling out for you nonstop
searching for that lap
which cherishes my childhood
I am searching that voice
calling out to me
I am seeking that heart
in which I lay in peace
until now

I am looking for you
Mausi
Wherever you could have been
there is a blue stony silence there
a cipher lingering after mourning

Tushar Dhawal

A BIRD ON MY PALM

английский

A bird has alighted
in the palm of my hand
Clasping a kite in her beak
and scratching her cloud-smeared wings
the dithering thing has come
from somewhere and is twittering
Her eyes enclose the kamini flower
that budded on the body
of a dead yesterday
Her body carries deep scars
from dried-up wounds
She came on and now nestles in my palm
as if she’s had faith in me
from who knows when
whereas I am a sheer stranger
Bearing countless cages
I flit about in my own cage
Thrusting my fingers through the bars
I grope about
Touching a cloud the long-dried bough
rings with consciousness and bursts into bloom
Peacocks break into dance
in my primal forest
The tired river in the veins
rises with a resounding rush
A city long drowned
in the surge of a turbulent ocean
languidly raises its head through the surface

Come perch on my shoulder

The world burdens
the crumbling plaster of my body
Onuses dangling like rattles
keep drumming against the thighs
Just today a grass has grown
in the dust that fell from the elbow
The sewn tongue groaned
with the desire to speak
When the time came
words felt lacking

I kept walking on constellations
amidst comets
and remained quiet
            quiet
quiet

Be muffled in my cluster
Wander in my wilderness
Thunder in my explosion

Dance on my forehead
Twitter on my tongue
            so no words sprout
no line gets born   no colours mingle
such that this union of language and prana
            doesn’t bear a name
