La mar s'ho empassa tot

Laia Malo

hi llenço les ganes de violar-te
quan t’esperes a l’escala
no volent-me fer l’amor;

hi llenço l’estrambòtic enyor
de tenir-te dins i no trobar-te
com una ferida sense bala;

hi llenço els mots amb una pala
si escric versos que, per error,
aconsegueixen trempar-te;

hi llenço les ganes d’estimar-te,
els llibrets folrats de la sala,
les mosquetes del Xador...

i la mar s’ho empassa tot.

And the sea engulfs it all

английский

far out I’ll toss the urge to rape you
when you wait on the stairs
not wanting to make Love to me;

far out I’ll toss this irksome longing
to feel you inside me but not find you
as anything but an open wound, the bullet lost;

far out I’ll toss these words with a spade
if I should write verse that, erroneously,
happens to deceive you;

far out I’ll toss the need to love you,
lined librettos from the prayer-hall,
the fly-swatters from under the Chador...

and the sea engulfs it all.

La deriva del no moure's

Laia Malo

La deriva del no moure's.
Aquell no saber-se enlloc
perquè l’espai no t’és estrany
de fa massa llunes i vents,

és el que empeny qualsevol soca
de figuera a retòrcer-se en un dolor de panxa encesa;

si no m’ets fèrtil, Terra roja!

A drift of stasis

английский

A drift of stasis.
That sense of feeling adrift
as nothing has felt strange about this space
for many moons and changes in the wind now,

this is what pushes any old stump
of a fig tree to gnarl and twist up in the pain of an inflamed stomach;

this is what pulls on my desire – in twists
and turns towards the railings of that curtained window.

A spell cast on myself:
I shall neither eat nor drink until my nest
is filled with your seeds.

But I refuse to be your little swallow,
if you are not fertile for me, Red Earth!

Aquests morts no fan pudor de morts

Laia Malo

These dead don't stink like dead

английский

These dead don't stink like dead.
The skinny moon bathes their faces,
and a bed of leaves brightens their sores,
and they smell of feathers from ravens and woodpeckers,

but, especially, rooting in the rocks,
in the rocks that make them at home in the holy grounds:
none of you will see a worm, or even a fly
the slime of no snail could wipe away their names.
And in August the roses bloom, too.

Hi ha tanta carn, als meus malsons

Laia Malo

a l'estació humida de l'Índia, i recordo
i jo, majestuosa vaca, m'ofreno al dia.

My nightmares have so much flesh

английский

Silence: the Earth will give birth to a tree.
Vicente Huidobro

My nightmares have so much flesh
that I wake up in a sweat, as though I'd let you inside
a rainy season in India, and I recall
just the smells ―your voice, a sitar―
And me as a mighty cow, offering up to day.

Laia Malo

i inclement, m'espera.
La ciclogènesi està anunciada.
Malgrat això, em presentaré a declarar
― voluntària: aquest Amor
no el vull callar, encar
que em surtin corbs negres
no pas coloms, de la boca.

I inherited the well-turned phrase

английский

I inherited the well-turned phrase,
but they shortened ―my name,
and I grew up just a chatty child.
If, for all she said, she didn't escape
the whips, the hooks, or the stake,
if her god could only just cover up
her dignity with snow,
for me, a defiant youth, death
awaits, bloody and unkind.
The cyclogenesis has been foretold.
But I will step forward and declare
―freely: this Love,
I will not gag it, even
if my mouth, crow-filled,
doveless, should burst.
