Wisława Szymborska, was born in 1923 in Kórnik and is one of the most famous and beloved polish poets, known as the "Mozart of Poetry". She moved to Kraków in 1931 where she lived and worked until her death in early 2012.

Szymborska began her studies of Polish Literature and Sociology, which she never finished, at the Jagiellonian University in Kraków after the end of World War II. She published her first poem Looking for words in the daily newspaper Dziennik Polski in march 1945. Like many communist intellectuals initially close to the official party line, Szymborska gradually grew estranged from socialist ideology and renounced her earlier political work. Although she did not officially leave the party until 1966, she began to establish contacts with dissidents. In 1953, Szymborska wrote book reviews and a poetry column called Lektury Nadobowiązkowe for the literary review magazine Życie Literackie (Literary Life). Many of her essays of this time were later published in book form. She also worked as a translator from French and German literature into Polish.

Szymborskas poetry is known for its irony and covers a wide range of topics, often relating to daily situations and its paradoxes and contradictions, seen from unusual points of view. In 1996, she was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature.
