Svetlana Cârstean, born in Botoșani, Romania in 1969 is a poet and a journalist. She studied Romanian and French literature at the University of Bucharest. As a student, she founded and coordinated the literary circle 'Central', along with Razvan Radulescu, T. O. Bobe and Cezar Paul-Badescu, and later she joined 'Litere' literary circle at the Faculty of Letters, University of Bucharest whose director was the poet Mircea Cărtărescu, one of Romania’s most significant proponents of postmodernism.

Her first poems appeared in the review 'Adevarul Literar si Artistic' in 1993 and in the anthology 'Family Picture / Tabou de familie' (together with Sorin Gherguţ, Razvan Radulescu, Cezar Paul-Badescu, T. O. Bobe and Mihai Ignat; Leka Brancus, 1995). 'Floarea de menghină' [The Vice Flower], her first book, was presented at the Bucharest Book Fair in June 2008. Highly emotional and playful, her poems have brought her much attention at home and abroad as well as prizes and fellowships. She contributed poetry and articles to the following literary reviews: “Luceafarul”, “Adevarul Literar si Artistic”, “22”, “Dilema”, “Interval”, “Euresis”, “L’Invitation”, “Cartea” and “Exces”. .

Svetlana Cârstean has worked as a freelance journalist for press and television and has edited various magazines and anthologies. She lives and works in Bucharest, where she also teaches French.
