Josep Maria de Sagarra (Barcelona, 1894-1961) was a playwright, journalist, novelist, memoir writer, translator and, above all, a poet.

Sagarra’s use of a rich and living language and of rhetorical devices of tremendous artistry combined, above all, with his aim to entertain and move the reader or spectator forged a connection between him and his audience and readers, and he was rewarded with resounding successes at the theatre, among them La corona d'espines (1930, Crown of Thorns), L'Hostal de la Glòria (1931, Gloria’s Hostel), El Cafè de la Marina (1933, Marina’s Café) and La Rambla de les floristes (1935, Avenue of the Florists). His works of poetry include Cançons de rem i de vela (1923, Rowing and Sailing Songs), El comte Arnau (1928, Count Arnau) and El poema de Nadal (1931, Christmas Poem). His novel Vida privada (1932) (Private Life, New York, Archipelago Books, 2015) is regarded as the iconic novel of Barcelona.

He contributed regularly to the press and compiled some of his articles in two volumes: Cafè, copa i puro (1929, A Coffee, A Glass and A Cigar) and L'aperitiu (1937, The Aperitif). In 1938, he moved to France, where he devoted himself in the main to translating The Divine Comedy. He returned to Catalonia in 1940 and joined clandestine literary circles. With the help of a number of patrons, he completed his translation of Dante, translated Shakespeare’s plays and wrote his charming and lengthy Memòries (1954, Memoirs). A large number of his works have been translated into various languages and some have been adapted for television and film.
