Jáchym Topol was born on August 4, 1962 in Prague, Czechoslovakia. Topol began writing as a songwriter for the rock band Psí vojáci in the late 70s and early 80s. Topol co-founded the samizdat magazine Violit (1982) and the Revolver Revue (1985), which was a samizdat review that specialized in modern Czech writing.

Because of his father's dissident activities, Topol was not allowed to go to university. He himself was imprisoned several times, both for his samizdat publishing activities and for his smuggling across the Polish border in cooperation with members of Polish Solidarity. Topol was also a signer of the Charter 77 human rights declaration.

During the Velvet Revolution in Czechoslovakia, Topol wrote for the independent newsletter Informační servis, which later became the investigative weekly Respekt.

The whole year 2008 he spent in Berline on creative scholarship. The following two years he worked for the daily Lidové noviny. Today he is programmatic director in Václav Havel Library. So far his books were translated into fifteen languages. According his novels Anděl and Sestra were shot two film adaptations by directors Vladimír Michálek and Vít Pancíř.
