David Castillo, born in Barcelona in 1961, is a journalist, critic, novelist, and poet. From his youth he has been a tireless cultural activist and hence has brought together a range of alternative groups – as an active participant in recitals and by publishing in fanzines – organizing and directing poetry festivals and as director of cultural supplements in the mainstream press (since 1989 he has been director of the cultural supplement of the newspaper Avui).

Outstanding among his poetic works, which are characterized by a spareness of form, relentless sincerity, rock motifs and Barcelona settings, are Game Over and El pont de Mühlberg. His two novels published hitherto, El cel de l’infern and No miris enrere, constitute a portrait of a generation, revealing the same concerns as those that appear in his poetry.

Castillo’s poetry rejects intentional rhetoricism, while also avoiding empty formalism and gratuitous experimentalism. With his background of the early post-dictatorship years of transition and marked by the emergence from clandestinity of the anti-Franco dissidents, Castillo (author of a biography of Bob Dylan) finds inspiration in rock poetry and underground culture. He is a member of the 1980s generation, and hence produced the anthology Ser de segle, while also frequently organizing or participating in lectures and recitals that have brought to the public poetry that has often been neglected by the Establishment culture.

In recent years, Castillo has become well known as a writer after being awarded a number of prestigious prizes, for example the Carles Riba Poetry prize and the Sant Jordi Prize for the Novel.
