Damis Šodan (Split, 1964) is a Croatian poet, playwright and translator. He graduated from Zagreb University with a BA in English Literature and History. He has published four volumes of poetry, Glasovne promjene (Sound Changes, 1996), Srednji svijet (The Middle World, 2001), Pisma divljem Skitu (Letters to a Wild Scythian, 2009), Café Apollinaire (2013, in print), two collections of plays, Zaštićena zona/Kain ili njegov brat (Safe Area/Cain or His Brother, 2002), Noć dugih svjetala (The Night of the Long Beams, 2009) and an anthology of contemporary Croatian "neorealist" poetry, Drugom stranom (Different Drum, 2010). He was awarded the Držić prize for the burlesque Chic lit (2012) and the 1st prize at the playwriting competition for the ex-Yugoslav writers in Vienna (2000) for Zaštićena zona (Safe Area). Internationally, his work has been featured in The American Poetry Review (2007), New European Poets, (Graywolf Press, USA, 2008), Les Poètes de la Méditerranée (Gallimard, 2010) and The World Record (Bloodaxe, 2012). Since 1996 he has worked as a translator for the UN in the Hague, the Netherlands, where he still resides. He has participated at many international poetry festivals and gatherings; most recently (2012) he represented Croatia at the Poetry Parnassus, the so-called "poetry Olympics" in London.
