The Old Walls

inglês | Zoë Skoulding

The wall is who we are and they are not and
farther in the boundaries collapse in a rush of
security as cells multiply and break through stone
translucent grit cracks the skin open to the elements
we go down through layers and this is history
a low door at the foot of the walls opens into starry
arches articulate as loin bones the slender joints
lithe as a voice disappearing from behind the
words behind the walls where water moves
against deep tones of trees that cloud the air
behind the smell of wet earth the voice leaves
the shape of itself and the footprints of walkers
trace the shell of the city its dead words
we crawled out of our words tender like snails
and the new city grows from the loins of the old
as lichen spreads in acid maps invading and
retreating the city runs along fingers runs along
roads and wires and into fields and the sightlines
run back to the city in wires and the walls
keep nothing out and the nothing beyond as a cloud
of eyes moves through the streets and falls like rain

Staré zdi

checo

Zeď je kdo jsme my a oni nejsou a
     svůj tvar a stopy chodců
sledují skořepinu města jeho mrtvá slova
vylezli jsme ze svých slov křehcí jako šneci
a nové město vyrůstá z beder starého
zatímco lišejník se šíří kyselými mapami vnikající a
     ustupující město roztahuje prsty
uhání podél cest a drátů do polí a linie pohledů
vedou zpět do města v drátech a zdi
nic nenechají venku a to nic za nimi jako mračno
očí táhne ulicemi a padá jako déšť

You Will Live in Your Own Cathedral

inglês | Zoë Skoulding

The cathedral of sand is a storm
trickling through fingers, loose between roots,
or a single grit in the eye.

The cathedral of trees is built of mottled wings
and daubs of light on trunks or the carved
names of lovers surviving love.

The cathedral of letters trembles at the edges
of paper curling and yellowing
under the force of gravity or promises.

The cathedral of words is buttressed
against the pressure of lips falling open
on air caught in a windpipe.

The cathedral of winds whispers
through airwaves, cables or repeated loops
in the pitch glissando of speech.

The cathedral of books is on fire, its tongues
rushing into wind as charred pages
sweep up to settle in the dark, like snow.

The cathedral of glass is misted over
by the scratch of voices wearing it to sand.

Budeš bydlet ve vlastní katedrále

checo

Tower

inglês | Zoë Skoulding

the wind
tower
could be
  a pack
of lies
on stilts
or else
 a call to
prayer
language
disembodied
via
radiator
pipes
between
          storeys
   as voices
tangle
in the
breeze
directives
are
disobeyed
but
something
holds it up
 still it
leans
between us
  on ladders
where we
built it in
the silt
of the
buried river
flooding
the foundations
again
and
again songs
ooze    underground

Věž

checo

větrná
věž
by mohla být
snůškou
lží
na kůlech
anebo
výzvou
k modlitbě
řeč
ztratila tělo
v rozvodu
trubek
topení
mezi
patry
jak se hlasy
proplétají
ve vlahém
vánku
porušují
se
předpisy
ale
něco
ji drží pohromadě
stále se
mezi námi
opírá
o žebříky
kde jsme ji
vystavěli
v bahně
pohřbené řeky
zaplavující
základy
znovu
a
znovu písně
prýští  pod zemí

The Building Constructed from its Own Fall

inglês | Zoë Skoulding

Our feet drag with the effort of
holding it all up. Or is this

weight the way it holds us
down? It begins with an echo,

then a footprint in rubble,
dust gathered into clouds

that churn into a storm
before the ground unsettles,

loose bricks flying up
in the repulsion of forces –

upper storeys rocket
from billows of cement

bound in the blast as walls
heave themselves together,

steel unbuckles, cracks
in the concrete disappear.

Hard to say whether this is
destruction or creation

as the building rises to a tremor,
the shape of itself shifting

into true, the core straight
above its foundation –

a split second of balance
before the fuse lit in a place
that used to be the future.

Budova vystavěná z vlastního pádu

checo

Budova vystavěná z vlastního pádu

Naše nohy se vlečou a snaží se
vše udržet. Nebo nás právě

tahle tíha sráží k zemi?
Začíná to ozvěnou,

pak stopou v suti,
prachem shluknutým v mračna,

jež se pění v bouři,
než země se otřese,

vzduchem létají cihly
odpudivou silou –

horní patra vylétají
z vln cementu

spojená výbuchem, když zdi
se vzedmou k sobě

ocel se rozskočí, praskliny
v konstrukci zmizí.

Těžko říct, jestli je to
ničení, nebo tvoření,

když budova se zvedá k otřesu,
její tvar se posouvá

do skutečného, s jádrem přímo
nad základy –

zlomek vteřiny v rovnováze,
než praskla pojistka v místě,

které bývalo budoucností.

Building Site

inglês | Zoë Skoulding

Between the buildings
                                    trees reach down
            to languages
                                    of soil and worms,
                                               leaves gloss argots of glass and steel;
            woods lie down on floors
                                                          to bounce back
every word,     every word
                                               you speak
with the long
echo of your footsteps down into the mud.

In simultaneous decay and growth
this maze of streets and squares
puts down its roots,
                       unsettling the ground
                                               with every new inflection, every
demolition: first the trees, then the wooden
                                               houses, bricks, the broken concrete.
Look,
now you can see in the ruins how
buildings took hold and pushed up
through your bones, rubble, walls of earth,
                                               this tangle of useless pipes.

Staveniště

checo

Mezi budovami
stromy sahají dolů
k řeči
hlíny a červů,
v listí se blyští argoty ze skla a oceli;
lesy leží na podlahách
a odrážejí
každé slovo  každé slovo
které řekneš
s táhlou
ozvěnou tvých kroků do bláta.
V současném rozkladu i růstu
toto bludiště ulic a náměstí
zapouští kořeny
rozrušuje zemi
s každým novým ohýbáním, s každou
demolicí: nejprve stromy, potom dřevěné
domy, cihly, popraskaný beton.
Podívej,
teď v těch troskách vidíš, jak
se domy uchytily a prorostly
skrz tvé kosti, suť, stěny země
tuto spleť zbytečných trubek.
