Presència de la mort

Dóna bo la llum:
dintre de la cambra,
tot el verd i el rosa
jugaven a fet.
Manyac entra el sol
de les deu tocades.
D' esperança l' aire
duia penjarolls,
que de Sant Joan
era la vigília,
i jo n'era tota
bandera d' estiu.
Somrigué l' infant
a l'adéu del pare
i entre roba càndida
restava tranquil.
I ella va venir...
La cambra vibrava;
ja tota em prenia
el trast matinal.
I ella va venir,
callada, insensible.
I jo no la veia
colpir el meu infant.
Entre tanta llum,
qui l' endevinava?
Fou la galta pàl·lida
que em digué la mort.

Presence of death

The light was wholesome:
within the room
the green and pink
played hide-and-seek.
The gentle sun
came in at ten.
The air was filled
with little garlands
because it was
the day before St. John’s
and I was all
summer’s flag.
The baby smiled
to father’s goodbye
and lay in peace
under guileless covers.
And then he came...
The room was astir;
fully engrossed
by morning chores.
And then he came,
silent, unfeeling.
I didn’t see him
strike my baby.
Amidst so much light
who would have known?
The colorless cheek
told me death.
