Matija Bećković was born in November 29, 1939. Since 1991 a regular member of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts. An impressive literary figure, Bećković is with his gesture and voice one of the most distinguished poets of the Serbian literature of the seventies. Critics regard his contribution to language as a genuine achievement: in moments of a deep crisis of identity and self-knowledge he successfully renewed language of poetry and poetic forms of patriarchal culture. Collected poems of Matija Bećković in six volumes published in 1990.
