Madeleine Gagnon was born on July 27, 1938. She is a known poet, novelist and critic. Gagnon received her BA in arts (literary studies) in Acadia in 1959, her MA in philosophy at the University of Montreal in 1961 and her doctorate in literature from Aix-en-Provence in 1968.

Gagnon was a literary professor at the University of Quebec at Montreal from 1969 to 1982. Since then, Gagnon has been an invited professor and writer-in-residence at the University of Montreal, University of Sherbrooke, University of Quebec at Montreal and the University of Quebec at Rimouski.

Gagnon has contributed texts to journals such as Chroniques (that she founded with Patrick Straram), Liberté,La Nouvelle Barre du jour, Possibles, Osiris, Dérives, Estuaire, la Chambre blanche, Résistance, Urgences, Passages, In’hui (France) and Actuels. Gagnon has given several public readings of her texts, and has written works for the radio and given presentations in English Canada, the USA and Europe. Her works are included in anthologies published in English Canada, France, Italy and the USA.
