Bogomil Gjuzel was one of the founders of the association of Independent Writers of Macedonia and its first chairman. Since 1995 he has been editor-in-chief of the journal of the Independent Writers of Macedonia Nashe Pismo. He has been director of the International Festival Struga Poetry Evenings.

Gjuzel has published over fifteen books of poetry, essays, travelogues, stories and plays. Lech Miodinsky wrote and published a Ph.D. dissertation on Bogomil Gjuzel's poetry in Polish, translated and published in Macedonian in 1999.

Bogomil Gjuzel has translated several plays by Shakespeare, O'Neil, Sheppard, Pinter and selected poetry by T. S. Eliot, W. H. Auden, C. Simic, Emily Dickinson and Seamus Heaney. He has co-edited and translated into Macedonian the anthology of Contemporary American Poetry.

For his books of poetry he won the Miladinov Brothers and Aleksa Santic awards. His works are translated into English, French, Serbo-Croatian and Slovenian.

Bogomil Gjuzel's poems are inspired by the symbols of his country's history and by those in popular Balkan legends. The titles by themselves might suggest epics, instead we find lyric poetry of commitment. He uses personae and circumstances of the past as primary frames for his sensibility to operate freely and passionately. In a language both bright-coloured and controlled he turns ancient spaces into arenas for some of the more central preoccupations of our time. Forms and elements of the archaic imagination emerge gracefully into new expression; ancient incantation enters the metre of contemporary free verse without hampering it, rather, making it deeper and more intricate. In these poems Bogomil Gjuzel successfully engages in the difficult task of returning to native symbols a lost universality.
