Amanda Aizpuriete was born 1956 in Jurmala, near Riga, in Latvia and studied philology and philosophy at the University of Latvia in Riga. Later she worked two years at the Maxim Gorky Literature Institute in Moscow; then as a radio journalist. Besides she translates Russian poets such as Mandelstam and Akhmatova, as well as German authors as Kafka, Rilke, Trakl or Bachmann into Latvian.

In 1999 Amanda Aizpuriete received the 'Horst Bieneck promotion award for poetry'.
