Der Pollenflug
Im Frühjahr ziehen die Wolken,
Rot-gelb vor blühender Lust,
Durch die Schatten, die grünen
Hyperbeln des Vorgebirges;
Die Amseln rufen vergeblich
Und plustern die Brüste
Gegen die Elstern, die strebsam
Die Nester leerräumen; und
Der Pirol federt scheu den schwarz-
Gelben Stempel der Flucht
In die ausgelieferte Landschaft,
Wo Pollenflug herrscht; –
Welch eine Gegend, denkst du,
Reist bedauernsvoll ab: im
Rücken die Herden der Hügel,
Die der Tränke zugehn.

The Pollen Drift
The clouds drift in the spring,
Reddish yellow with blooming desire,
Through the shadows, the green
Hyperbolas of the foothills;
The blackbirds call in vain
And puff up their chests
Against the magpies that strive
To empty the nests; and
The oriole timidly feathers the blackish
Yellow stamp of flight
Into the helpless landscape
Where the pollen drift prevails;
What a place, you think,
Departing full of regret: behind
You, the herds of hills
Heading to the watering hole.
