KIYIDAKI İHTiYAR
Derin dağlar kat kat sıralanmıştı
Çamlık iniyordu denize kadar
Kıyıda iri yarı bir ihtiyar
Çakıllara sırtüstü uzanmıştı
Ve bu olgun güneşli eylül günü
Uzak haberi batmış gemilerin
Poyraz yeli mavi masmavi serin
Okşuyordu ihtiyarın yüzünü
Ve karnının üstündeydi elleri
İki yengeç gibi inatçı yorgun
Zamandan kuvvetli bir yolculuğun
Sert kabuklu merhametsiz zaferi
Ve göz kapakları tuzlu kırışık
Kapanıvermişlerdi yumuşacık
Bu karanlıkta altın pırıltılar
Dinliyordu uğultuyu ihtiyar
Denizi uzun dişli balıkları
Ve tanyerlerinin alevlerini
Dipte çiçek açan kayalıkları
Ağları ve balıkçı evlerini
Ama belkide bulutlara yakın
Çamların tepesiydi uğuldayan
Biliyordu başı döner adamın
Onlara aşağıdan baktığı zaman
Derin dağlar kat kat sıralanmıştı
Çamlık iniyordu denize kadar
Kıyıda iri yarı bir ihtiyar
Çakıllara sırtüstü uzanmıştı
OLD MAN ON THE SHORE
Plunging mountains range upon range
pinewoods descending to the sea
an old rugged man on the shore
stretched out his back on the pebbles
and this sun-ripe September day
with its faraway message of sunk ships
the north-east wind deep blue and cool
was caressing the old man's face
and his hands on his belly
were like two crabs weary and stubborn
tough-skinned pitiless trophies
of a journey stronger than time
his wrinkled eyelids crusty with salt
suddenly gently closed
in this gold-flecked darkness
the old man heard the roaring
the sea and its long-toothed fish
the flaming dawns
the flowers that open on the rocky seabed
fishing-nets and fishermen's cabins
but perhaps it was the roar of pine-tops
near the clouds
he knew how dizzy a man can feel
when he looks at them from below
plunging mountains range upon range
pinewoods descending to the sea
an old rugged man on the shore
stretched out his back on the pebbles
