THE GLOBE

Blue tilted pupil
staring at heaven,
a child’s small hand
can set you spinning.

Countries and borders,
like cataracts,
float on your surface
as passing facts

arranged by history,
shifted by wars,
erased by time
like dinosaurs.

Artifice, too,
that web of lines
crossing the sphere
on which we find

ourselves all alone
like aliens in space,
observing continents
flow down your face,

while you on your own
are ignorant of pain,
geography’s game plan:
simply remain.

But should we vacate
your azure premises,
who will there be
to measure the distances

from ocean to landfall,
from equator to cap;
who will there be
to color the map?

No matter. Don’t worry.
It’s not your concern.
Another sun sets,
another Troy burns,

as you circumnavigate
the core of your being
– empty dead air,
cardboard and printing.

DER GLOBUS

Schrägblaue Pupille
in den Himmel starrend
eine kleine Kinderhand
kann dich ins Kreiseln bringen.

Länder und Grenzen
gleichsam Katarakte
treiben auf deiner Oberfläche
als flüchtige Fakten.

geschichtlich arrangiert,
verlagert durch Kriege,
ausgelöscht durch die Zeit
wie Dinosaurier.

Genauso ein Kunstgriff
dieses Netz von Linien
das die Sphären überzieht
in denen wir uns selbst

ganz alleine finden
wie Außerirdische im Raum
Kontinente beobachtend
die dein Gesicht durchgleiten

während du ganz bei dir
schmerzunempfindlich bist
Spielplan der Geographie:
einfaches Überdauern.

Aber sollten wir das azurblau
Gegebene verlassen,
wer wird dann da sein
die Entfernungen zu messen

vom Ozean zur Landung
von Polkappe zum Äquator
wer wird dann da sein,
um die Landkarte einzufärben?

Macht nichts. Keine Sorge.
Das ist nicht deine Sache.
Eine andre Sonne geht unter,
ein andres Troja in Flammen auf

während du den Kern
deines Seins umschiffst
- leere tote Luft,
Pappe und Vierfarbdruck.
