[womit soll man beginnen]

allemand | Ronya Othmann

[with what should one begin]

anglais

with what should one begin if one has walked, counting off
the moons like an alphabet. with this hamlet, this
courtyard-emptiness, between barn and woods, not even wind and.
what the fog chokes out hangs in the morning grasses.
a dampness, a heaviness, your hair divided in the middle. it trickles
and i smooth it out, dull light. i don’t swallow. what i’m waiting for
doesn’t   happen.  with   which   pronoun   should   i   provide   you   and
to what end should i breathe. a twitch in the grass blades, before i forget,
from which animal or was there one. in the distance a thunderstorm gathers
into itself and where to. you count a burned-down house and in it
was nothing but a bed, a chair, a table and my bed, my chair,
my table. my sleep falls into a slant. from then on
one can’t remain, only question. where does one carry this region to.
and with what does one feed the fog.

[aus dem naturkundemuseum weiß ich]

allemand | Ronya Othmann

rückwärts. nimmt man beim singen
einen vogel hinzu, kann man den
pfeifton weglassen. aus dem naturkunde-
museum weiß ich nicht: ist das mein
wald oder deiner. und ein rückstoß der
sich in den gräsern zeigt, wie ein
geräusch, in einer esche grau, eine
scherge auch, einen sucher, schauer, eine
ursache aus. wohin mit dem schorf.

[from the natural history museum i know]

anglais

from the natural history museum i
know: grinding sand between my
fingers, soil and coal, does not decorate
the vine, the boar provokes itself, shows
itself, shears time around itself. how are
these trees to be understood. and do the
hairs on my body make a meadow. the
easiest way to love is backwards. if one
adds a bird while singing, one can leave
out the sound of whistling. from the
natural history museum i do not know:
is that my forest or yours. and a recoil
that shows itself in the grasses, like a
sound, a gray ash, a basher too, ashen,
awash, a reason out. where to put the
scab.

[wirf die löwenmäulchen hinter dich]

allemand | Ronya Othmann

[throw the snapdragons behind you]

anglais

throw the snapdragons behind you.
you may not turn back. leave
everything behind that reminds you of
them. the sweepings by the gate, you
spell them out in winter, like a
sparrow spells out march. already you
no longer know what it was. snow, as
though it had never been here. empty
courtyard entryways, a mistaken
assertion, the black-eyed susan behind
your back. no name for your girl. the
village has no house for you. not even
in the forest can one live. you ask
yourself as you go, whether it’s the
pavement that does not wear your
shoes or your shoes that do not wear
the pavement.

[ein in schnee gehetztes reh]

allemand | Ronya Othmann

[a deer driven into snow]

anglais

a deer driven into snow, to the vanishing point. as though everything were just
a drawing, the spruces thinned out. everywhere one looks, fieldwork.
i don’t have another, only this ploughing, tilling,
furrowing before it vanishes into white. i follow no one but this
thaw, this rivulet, letting all fall into place. who drew these maps.
who drew these lines. one tries a little, takes
for example the high-necked coats, the bleached hair.
like an animal licking its wounds, and me by a sea. but here
there is only wave-like iron. distant reverberation, the freeway
washing out flotsam and me, with closed eyes. take me
to the land of my forefathers and send a walking stick, so that I
from my grave, if need be, can still defend.
