géorgien | Bela Chekurishvili

Salome (excerpt)

anglais

                          Matthew 6, 5-11

“Dance, Salome!”
– The teacher was strict
And did not care that I was tired
Mother kept saying that
I was complaining in vein,
Nobody would have pity on me
“When you conquer the best knights’ hearts
With your dance,
Think of me” –
Was her reply to my tears
She would leave me in the mirror hall by myself.
Outside, the sunshine rang on the palm branch
And my feet longed to run away where
Girls were ringing laughter in summer houses
And whispering about knights all the time.
“Dance Salome,
If you want to learn
You have to dance from matins
Till sunset.
Your heart should dictate the music
To your feet and arms.
Listen not with ears but with body!
Dance Salome,
Jingle your bracelets!
Hands are able to say a lot more than lips,
Do not bend your head.
Look straight forward!
Look up the at sky
And if you devote your look to any particular knight
Do not let a smile appear on your face.
The teacher was inaccessible and demanding
And even amused.
Dance Salome,
“Your body is created to get everything, whatever you wish
Without saying a single word.
And when you grow up
For just one dance
The whole kingdom
Will be spread under your feet like a carpet.
For just a single dance
Thousands of heads will take a bow before you,
And you will choose the only one
That will lead you into infinity.
Dance Salome,
You have to dance a lot till that day comes.”

géorgien | Bela Chekurishvili

Poets Never Count Their Steps

anglais

     "Poets Never Count Their Steps"
       Georgian proverb

They count lines and words in lines and syllables in words.
They count where to stop, rest, take a breath, complain, groan, change.
They count and measure like ancient architects, medieval alchemists, Jewish usuries, Meidani dealers,
insurance agents, tailors.
They count emotions, passions, charismas, suicides, friends, prostitutes, important or unimportant people,
street days, house nights.
They count and measure them as if they were pebbles, cobblestones, carved boulders, marble, granite,
bricks, so that to exactly fit them in to build shelters, temples, castles, there to run away, to hide, to confess.
But sometimes their houses, temples, castles turn out to be a shelter for others as well, and then nobody
remembers that he himself has been used as a building material, has been cut, planed, hewn, welded.

-Definition for all aforementioned, in a school chrestomathy – a poem.

géorgien | Shota Iatashvili

Motion

anglais

A wind was blowing and a woman was flying with the wind
the woman was flying with the wind and a man was running after her
the man was running and all his friends were following him
the friends were coming along and a pub was standing
the pub was standing and the beer was turning sour
the beer was turning sour and the bartender was getting old
the bartender was getting old and his hair was falling
his hair was falling as bombs were falling down from the sky
bombs were falling from the sky and the houses were collapsing
the houses were collapsing and a new pub was being constructed
a new pub was being constructed and new friends were coming along
new friends were arriving and a new man was running along
a new man was running along and a new woman was flying with the wind
and a new woman was flying with the wind and the old wind was blowing
the old wind was blowing and new windmills were turning
the windmills were turning and the new Don Quixote was coming into the world
the new Don Quixote was coming into the world and Cervantes was dying
Cervantes was dying and Shakespeare was also dying
or it was the 23rd of April 23rd in 1616 and
literature was mourning and God was laughing
God was laughing and occasionally a man was laughing too.
The man was laughing and drinking beer
or vise versa: he was drinking beer at first and then laughing
followed by crying
and finally he finally rose to his feet and stumbled after the woman
the woman was running away tracing the wind
the wind was blowing and attempting to overtake the light
the man was standing and watching them try to catch up
and from time to time
the man was a physicist
a poet
a drunk.
The man was often going into the pub
and while the beer was turning sour and the bartender was getting old,
he was making conversation with his friends
and God was laughing
God was laughing…

And the wind was blowing

géorgien | Lia Sturua

*** [Sometimes you get used to a person]

anglais

Sometimes you get used to a person
Like you get used to a thing, or to bread,
Or to each new day.
Sometimes, you find a person and run away
As though you fear he's becoming
Just like the others. When you met me,
The guilt was eating me up,
And odd sense of it,
But you way the books inside my head,
Opened one of them
And found a murdered poet.
And them, again and again,
You expressed your sympathies,
Lightning me up with a dazzling day
So that my head may charm you with hair
Or a pose that is best in the sun,
Yet x-ray film never lies.
What you wanted was to get at the truth,
To immediately help yourself escape.
But you didn't manage to leave, to get away...

géorgien | Lia Sturua

*** [All night on cotton feet]

anglais

All night on cotton feet,
and in the morning - their amputation.
Window trees, taking out
The opera singers Kallases an d Karusos
From the same fridge.
Sugar candy of Si Bemol.
His hand stretches out from the blanket
As domestic as dust
Rolled out from a carpet
Like chickens of laziness,
I was dependent on him;
Nevertheless, he left.
In the very end, he was spreading
Blood on bread,
Feeding me.
I could sense the truth
With my intestines,
Screaming from inside,
Am standing on the top of Si Bemol,
O, Lord,
Let Cobalt and Kinovar weaken!
Cover the black soil, white cerement.

géorgien | Lia Sturua

*** [The frozen street forces me to walk on nails]

anglais

The frozen street forces me to walk on nails:
The sharp sides pointed towards me,
The heads - deep in the ground.
Looking out of the window I am already frightened,
I make a deal with the TV
And some announcers grow inside my throat
Like nettles
And eventually they start talking like me:
Emotions on the top of the tongue,
a background in philology...
Leaving all those at home
I go out easier,
The nail-street,
Bends lie a cat's back -
Soft, with some warmth inside.
Who remembers me?
Is it really possible to stretch a hand
From out of the grave
As though from out of a blanket?

géorgien | Lia Sturua

The Twelfth Floor

anglais

Winter is approaching!
My skeleton has been laid bare.
My multi-storied skeleton
Hatches entire families.
My ribs hurt...
On the way
I collect relationships
Like taxes
Paying with nature:
Their knife, my neck,
Adrenaline, more than blood,
Meeting God
With a hungry stomach,
Flying ghosts of bread and fish,
Missing the table -
What will make them materialize again?
I enter the house
And tell the sour-smelling air:
My nobody, I've gotten so tired.

géorgien | Lia Sturua

Lie to me

anglais

Lie to me in a way
I can believe.
Support the lie with
A brick-colored wind,
White chickens
(A house and a wing).
But, when you do this,
You must be
About seventeen years old!
It starts with suck a lie
You can't make
At the age of 50 or 60:
A teenager's Gothic lie
To a grounded one-level story.
When only half of me remains
After having been poured completely into my previous writing,
Build me up with bricks and egg whites
(A house and a wing).
Be seventeen forever!
Eraser of memory, experience in the nails.
Deceive me!
Sometimes a punishment is given
For attempted euthanasia,
But look
At the sky that enters into
The blue-colored veins
Instead!

géorgien | Lia Sturua

Human Voice

anglais

I call the inquiry office
To hear a human voice.
I do not imitate anyone, not Cocteau -
Everyone has his own silence
Accompanied with more or less a degree of bitterness.
First verbosity, then eloquence,
Lectures given on the lectern barricades
With drops of blood,
Citations from poems,
Then her loneliness touches existence with her
Fingers all in rings.
I catch a weed,
She is phoning the man who abandoned her,
but he is out somewhere, drinking coffee,
And talking of a violet as if of a woman,
or vise versa - playing with aesthetics!
I am calling the inquiry office that gives away
phone numbers of only the living.
