Mi padre perdió el anillo de boda en el mar. Como todos los marineros, se lo
quitaba y lo colgaba de la cadena para no perder el dedo cuando largaban la red.
            Al cabo de unas mareas mi tía, mientras limpiaba unas merluzas, encontró un
anillo de oro dentro de una de ellas. Limpió el anillo y vió las letras y los números que
tenía grabados. Aunque parecía mentira, eran las iniciales y la fecha de la boda de mis
padres.
            Al perecer, mi padre pescó la misma merluza que se comió su anillo. En todo el
mar.

            La tranquila noche de verano trae viento del interior y recuerdos.
            Se me ha ocurrido, mirando al cielo, que las casualidades son planetas con una
órbita muy muy ancha.
            Sólo se ven de cuando en cuando.

            Lo del anillo es una casualidad demasiado grande. Pero da igual. lo importante
ahora es que durante muchos años la historia del anillo fue real en nuestras pequeñas
mentes de niño.

            De noche, el mar brilla como una merluza.
            Las estrellas saltan como escamas.

Mein Vater verlor seinen Trauring im Meer.
Wie alle Fischer hatte er ihn an einer Kette,
um nicht den Finger zu verlieren beim Werfen der Netze.
   Gezeiten später fand meine Tante beim Ausnehmen der Fische
in einem von ihnen einen goldenen Ring.
Sie reinigte den Ring und sah die Gravur.
Kaum zu glauben, doch
es waren die Initialien und der Hochzeitstag meiner Eltern.
   Wie es scheint, fing mein Vater genau den Fisch,
der seinen Ring geschluckt hatte. Auf offener See.

   Die stille Sommernacht bringt Landwind und Erinnerungen.
Beim Blick in den Himmel kam mir in den Sinn,
die Zufälle seien Planeten mit einer sehr sehr weiten Umlaufbahn.
   Man sieht sie nur selten.

   Das mit dem Ring ist ein zu großer Zufall. Doch
das ist egal. Wichtig ist nur, daß die Geschichte vom Ring
jahrelang Wirklichkeit war in unseren kleinen Kinderköpfen.

   Nachts schillert das Meer wie ein Fisch.
   Die Sterne funkeln wie Schuppen.

Father lost his wedding ring in the ocean once. Like all the trawlermen, he’d
take it from his finger to put on a neck chain, not to lose the finger as the net went out.
            Several tides after that, our aunt, while cleaning some hake, found a gold ring
in the belly of one of the fish.
            Once she’d washed it off, she examined the letters and numbers engraved
inside. Though it couldn’t be true, the date and the initials were those of our parents’
wedding.
            By all appearances, Father himself had caught the hake that had swallowed the
ring. In all of the wide blue sea.
            That’s how we learned it.
            Peaceable summer nights bring the inland wind, and the memories.
            I look at the sky, and it dawns that coincidences are the planets with the
amplest orbits.
            Only every so often have they come round.
            The ring’s is far too great a coincidence. It would have been lost and found in
that same stone sink. But it doesn’t matter. What’s most important now is this: for
years and years, the story of the ring was entirely believable to our child-sized
children’s intelligence.

             Nights, the ocean has the shimmer of hake.
            The stars go leaping around like the scales.
