Lehorrera igo gara. Bero da eta itzal egiten dute pinuek.
Gaziak dira zure besoak, gazia bularra, sabela gazia.
Ilargia itsasoarekin lotzen duen indar berak lotu gaitu geu ere.
Mendeak segundu bihurtu dira eta segunduak mende.
Udare zurituak gure gorputzak.

Salimos del agua. Hace calor. Hay sombra entre pinos.

La misma fuerza que une mar y luna nos ha unido.
Los segundos se confunden con los siglos

Wir gehen nackt ins Wasser.
Anemonen, Barsche, Igel.
Schau, das Meer streift den Sand
wie der Wind den Weizen streift.
Unter dem Wasser sehe ich dich.
Mir gefällt die langsame Bewegung von Armen und Beinen.
Mir gefällt dein zu Alge gewordenes Schambein.

Wir gehen aus dem Wasser. Es ist heiss. Da ist Schatten unter Pinien.
Deine Arme sind salzig, deine Brust ist salzig, dein Bauch.
Dieselbe Meer und Mond vereinende Kraft hat uns vereint.
Die Sekunden verschwimmen zu Jahrhunderten
und die Jahrhunderte zu Sekunden.
Unsere Körper sind frisch geschälte Birnen.

It’s Sunday on the beach for all people of good desires.
You can hear the faraway noise of it from the island.

We go into the water naked,
We see anemones, red mullets, sea-thistles on the bayfloor.
Look—like the wind the wheat the water moves the sand.
I go under and behold you from underneath.
I like the slow movement of your hands and legs.
I like your underbelly’s taking the form of seaweed.

We go up on dry land. It’s hot and the pines make shadow.
Your arms are salty, your chest salty, belly salty.
The same power that joins the moon with the sea
has joined us, too.
Centuries become a second and seconds centuries.
Our bodies, peeled pears.

We see anemones, red mullets, sea-thistles on the bayfloor.
It’s Sunday on the beach for all people of good desires.

Kirmen Uribe was born in Ondarroa, in Spain’s Basque Country, in 1970. After receiving his university degree in Basque philology, he did postgraduate work in comparative literature in Trento, Italy, and has worked as a teacher, translator, and scriptwriter.

He writes a weekly column for the Basque-language daily Berria, and has published essays, stories, comics, and children’s books, one of them shortlisted for the Premio Nacional. He has translated the poetry of Raymond Carver, Sylvia Plath, Anne Sexton, Mahmoud Darwish, and Wislawa Szymborska, among others.

In collaboration with Basque musicians Mikel Urdangarin and Bingen Mendizabal, he worked on a multimedia project—combining poetry/prose, video, music, and oral history—that was documented in the 2001 CD-book Bar Puerto. A similar collaboration led to the 2003 Zaharregia, txikiegia agian / Una manera de mirar / Too Old, Too Small, Maybe.

His first collection of poetry, Bitartean heldu eskutik (Meanwhile, Take My Hand), won Spain’s 2001 Premio de la Crítica, and has been translated into Spanish and French. The Spanish translation, Mientras tanto dame la mano, was published in June of 2004 by Visor. In English, his poems have appeared in Open City, The New Yorker, Circumference, and other magazines, and have been featured in spoken-word venues in New York and on the West Coast, as well as at The International Poetry Festival in Vilenica (Slovenia), the Samhain International Poetry Festival in Donegal, Ireland, the 2004 Literature Without Borders workshop in Käsmu, Estonia, Poetry Festival 2005 in Berlin, and other literary gatherings in Europe.
