No creo en ti, Señor, pero tengo tanta necesidad de creer en ti,
que a menudo hablo y te imploro como si existieras.
Tengo tanta necesidad de ti, Señor, y de que seas, que llego a
creer en ti –y pienso creer en ti cuando no creo en nadie.
Pero después me despierto, o me parece que despierto, y me
avergüenzo de mi flaqueza y te aborrezco. Y hablo contra ti que
no eres nadie. Y hablo mal de ti como si fueras alguien.
¿Cuándo, Señor, estoy despierto y cuándo estoy dormido?
¿Cuándo estoy más despierto y cuándo más dormido? ¿No será
todo un sueño y, despierto y dormido, sueño la vida? ¿Despertaré
algún día de este doble sueño para vivir, allende, la verdadera
vida, donde sueño y vigilia sean una mentira?
No creo en ti, Señor, pero si eres, no puedo darte lo mejor de mí
si no es así: diciéndote que no creo en ti. ¡Qué forma de amor
tan extraña y tan dura! Qué mal me hace no poderte decir: creo.
No creo en ti, Señor, pero si eres, sácame de este engaño de una
vez. ¡Hazme ver bien tu cara! No tengas en cuenta mi mezquino
amor. Haz que sin fin, y sin palabras, todo mi ser pueda decirte:
Eres.

I do not believe in you, Lord, but I have such a
need of believing in you that I often speak and
plead with you as if you existed.

I have such a need of you, Lord, a need of your
existing, that I come to believe in you – and believe
that I believe in you when I believe in no one.

Yet afterwards I awaken, or think that I awaken,
and I feel ashamed of my weakness and detest you.
And I speak out against you who are no one. And
I speak poorly of you as if you were someone.

When, Lord, am I awake, and when am I asleep?
When am I most awake and when most
asleep? Is it not all sleep and life, whether awake
or asleep, a dream? Will I awaken some day from
this double sleep and, far from here, lead the real
life where sleeplessness and sleep are but a lie?

I do not believe in you, Lord, but if you exist, I
cannot give you the best of me if it is not in this
fashion: by telling you I do not believe in you.
What a strange and harsh form of love! How it
hurts me not to be able to tell you: I believe.

I do not believe in you, Lord, but if you exist,
lead me away from this delusion once and for all;
make me see your face clearly! Do not bear malice
against me for my small-minded love. Enable my
whole being, endlessly and wordlessly, to say to
you: You exist.

Ich glaube nicht an dich, o Herr, aber ich habe so ein Bedürfnis, an dich zu glauben,
dass ich oft so rede und dich anflehe, als wenn’s dich gäbe.
Ich habe so ein Bedürfnis nach dir, o Herr, und dass du bist, dass ich manchmal sogar
an dich glaube – und denke, dass ich an dich glaube, indem ich an niemanden glaube.
Aber dann erwache ich, oder es scheint mir so, als erwachte ich, und
ich schäme mich meiner Schwäche und verabscheue dich. Und rede gegen dich,
der du niemand bist. Und rede schlecht von dir, als wenn du jemand wärest.
Wann, o Herr, bin ich wach und wann bin ich im Schlaf?
Wann bin ich wacher und wann mehr im Schlaf? Ist das etwa nicht alles ein
Schlaf und ich träume, wach und im Schlaf, das Leben? Werde ich eines Tages
aus diesem doppelten Schlaf erwachen und, weit weg von hier, das wahre Leben leben, wo das
Wachsein und der Schlaf eine Lüge sind?
Ich glaube nicht an dich, o Herr, aber wenn du bist, kann ich dir das Beste von
mir nicht anders geben als so: dir zu sagen, dass ich nicht an dich glaube. Was für eine
seltsame und harte Art der Liebe! Wie es mir weh tut, dir nicht sagen zu können:
Ich glaube.
Ich glaube nicht an dich, o Herr, aber wenn du bist, hol mich endlich
aus dieser Täuschung hesraus; lass mich deutlich dein Gesicht sehen! Nimm mir meine
schäbige Liebe nicht übel. Mach, dass ohne Ende, und ohne Worte, mein ganzes Wesen zu dir sagen kann:
Du bist.
