Silvio Rodríguez (*1946 in San Antonio de los Baños, Kuba) is one of the most renowned Cuban songwriters. His songs are well-known in the Spanish-speaking world and have been interpreted by many famous singers. Before his career, Rodríguez, son of a family of farmers, studied and worked as a waiter, drawer and as a military musician in Angola. He worked as well for the Cuban television and for Leo Brouwer in the now legendary group for sound experiments of the Cuban film department (Grupo de Experimentación Sonora). There he also released his first records.

Rodríguez began writing poetry very early in his life. But not until in between 1964 and 1968, after having started playing the guitar, he wrote his first songs. 1967 Rodríguez had his first concert in the Cuban television. His first LP Días y Flores (Days and Flowers) was released in 1975; at this time he had already composed hundreds of songs. Since then more than 20 albums followed, recently Segunda Cita (2010).

His music and his texts fascinate even those, who do not support his political views wholeheartedly – his songs are at the same time melancholic, romantic, poetic and time-critical. Silvio Rodríguez’ work is one of the finest examples for songtexts being outstanding poetry.
