Cees Nooteboom (1933) is an internationally renown writer of novels, novellas, travel books and poems. After publishing his first novel Philip en de anderen (Philip and the others) in 1955, he made his debut as a poet in 1956 with De doden zoeken een huis (The Dead Seek a Home). In the nearly five decades that followed, Nooteboom published an amazing collection of literary works, for which he is finally granted the P.C. Hooftprijs, the most important Dutch literary prize, in May 2004.

Although Nooteboom’s activities in literature cover almost all possible genres, he likes to think of himself as a poet first. His poems often reflect on other poets, thinkers or artists and deal with existential or philosophical questions. Still his poetry never gets too heavy or hermetic, in stead it almost always remains ‘at once transparent and mysterious’, as critic Daan Cartens puts it.

The literary works of Nooteboom have been translated and published in twenty languages. Collections of his poetry in translation have been published in Germany (Kleinheinrich and Suhrkamp), Italy (Edizioni del Leone), Spain (Circulo de Bellas Artes and Huerga & Fierro), Sweden (Ellerströms Förlag) and the US (Sun & Moon Press). In 2004 Nooteboom was among the six Dutch poets selected by Nobel Prize Winner J.M. Coetzee for his collection Landscape with Rowers – Poetry from the Netherlands (Princeton University Press).
