the new realm

inglés

broken hisses & static, bird coughs; to begin, assess

things mentally one last time: the

blue waffle tiling is as it ever was, brown

base chest-high in oil gloss and

stencilled shrubbery fading in the upper half : pine needles?

          they’re verging on music, like

seepage of voicings down from

the dimmed lamp-heads. there is no

labyrinth & no chandos-hysteria, just

this aroma of language & fake carnations : this

window had no bars before, this

tag on the wall is new ‘Enter the’

derelict industrial park—herring-bone scorings in concrete.

                      letzten acker tragen –

footienauts

inglés

The comrades were good people, they did not complain
About the effort or the thirst or the cold,
They behaved as do the trees and the waves
That accept the wind and the rain
Accept the night and the sun
And remain constant in change.

-Giorgio Seferis, ‘The Argonauts’

and when it felt called for they sang. the tiergarten years, we
dangled—showboating—in front of the reichstag. later, having embarked,
we held our formation on pitches in wedding, barfuss strasse, schillerpark.
parched earth, fully turkish ’hood, the droning
in the head as boeings slid braking toward tegel. so

a fall back to potsdam, peace and perfection: open grass, shaded, post-match dips
in heiligen see. ah, many landmarks sank past during a cooling front-crawl.
                                                                                         we swam past both
of gunther jauch’s villas. coming ashore, at table & the terraces
attached to villa kellerman. sunset. & the scent of evening while our
hair dried, tingling on the nape. Surrounded, there, by mansions

and the kept grounds of mansions. add in the lager,
steamed asparagus spears, the post-game analysis—all told; the good

               life. Until
from out of the bramble and undergrowth : living’s
weird little peon of a public parks tyrant come to forbid us this green patch forever,
final miracle pitch, wieland strasse—formerly hitlerring. still & with courage
                                                                                        we held ground,
a long way from the varying paradise, in potsdam. dirt pitch, public : barren atoll,
barren beachhead, where eternal grit silted up fresh wet abrasions. thus
legs aged, arms aged, thursday after thursday. we watched
good men crumple to their knees. & deliverance : exquisite clearing, pitch
in an opening in the woods toward michendorf. match night—& no one,

our opponents were no-shows. comrades, gazing into the grass underfoot for purpose,
                                                                                        after such toil, travel, now
this botch-up. retreat, then, to forckenbeck (prussian aristocracy) strasse in berlin.
pure English grass, though; lush, sprung, clipped like some storied last love, powerful
                                                                                        for having been but mirage.
grounds keeper prussian again but this time of dodgier stock “Oi! No studs ’ere, mate! Fack off wiv ’em boots!”
and never saw him again and can’t know
if he himself has since snuffed it or just his job it is made redundant. great
fields go to seed, the fleece’s sheen fades—are wanderings really endless? but

toned down & to myself, aren’t
the souls, the centres of my comrades after all this, after all this aren’t their bodies

                      also just the grave aspect
of the roughened pitch? its scars, divets, denuded swathes : it wears its living
as they do. our great long season, the near-great matches, where next my friends? can
we keep up & for how long? dear winfried, hendrik, peter, carsten, dear michael, tobias, jan—
please, once, let’s stay : bark orders, run into space, place long bending balls

into their half, elegant, one-touch, with style & together
                                            over this very last field—

Consolation peut-être

francés | Denise Desautels

Elle. Lui.

Consolation, perhaps

inglés

She. He. His arm held aloft, a thought suspended.

What does your body say when it’s still?
when it refuses to yield to the weight of the world?

To what do our bodies pretend to while trying to resist the pressure of
perpetual talk?
Our right hands, palm against palm.

Often we are two and often by clashing.

Two. To fall. To rise up. Obliterative din inside.
To search out the complex. A lengthening of dawn.
Two. Athletic. Borne on the air. With expectation.
Play. Joy. Consolation, perhaps.

Two. A lot of arms in an excessively fluid blue.
Two. A mobile architecture of gestures and shadows.
Who attempt a connection, blow through one another, caress lightly and
choose to continue.
Sometimes prop one another up.

Not always managing to forget the abuses of darkness. Outside, inside.
Near to suspicion, lightness, euphoria, metaphor.
We struggle in secret. Allow our lives to drift on a current. Mind elsewhere.
Firm hope.

Dancing is swimming.
Abandon our bodies to night’s oblique line.
Solo. Blind.

A lively black head. On your left leg, your breast. Under your right armpit.
What an astonishing picture of our humanity!
Still beautiful. Still vulnerable.

Sometimes his arms above, hers close to it all, close to nothing.
Arms in front arms behind, extravagant trellis.
Facing blunt facts, our arms’ extreme future.
Utopia, it seems, spreading its wings.
Three, twenty, a thousand diagonals of light.

Obscure forms moving in the indigo.
We persevere. We shake the mundane.
We observe ourselves without looking.
What’s next? And beyond?

Our living bodies, far-reaching, sculpt the city.
Our arms’ wingspan.
Our bodies cease moving. Sculptures.

Apparitions

Appearances

inglés

Cliff standing upright heavy with appearances under the sun’s indifference. Your eye, your cheek, your mouth, all the calm in your face resists. After that first wave of suffering — your distractedness, ah! — high memories. You crash, head-on, against those terrors on loop in the fissured silvering. Words fail you. Your story, the story of the universe; authentic and rough. Here are the states of your suffering, your nights to come, a surfeit of sundays, a surfeit of stars. You’re looking ahead. Available to the real, to the young century’s scented air.

Everything moves you closer to your fear, everything repels you : tomorrow, later, you carry your solitude away. Your portraits of women, the silhouettes to come, your hair, your gestures re-invent themselves. Hope as well, why not? Speck by speck, between sound and silence. It’s crazy what two hands can conceal. The skull, besieged dreams. Life acute along the blade of a cliff edge. You say: I am those figures who file past, filled with impertinence, and this brute sky’s threat, its droning, its quotidian dark. You say to her: we hold one another .

In one way, the day’s events slip into the fog: your amber aspects, the struggles, the challenges, the fatigues, desires, all shatter your thoughts. In another — hand in hand, menagerie and melancholy, it seems — a tenacious child rises up and places herself, sovereign, under the authority of one of your gazes. Now, she says. As though navigating through the obstacles of the inside and the elsewhere. Voilà, that’s it exactly, seems so natural, at the most profound, in the self’s gravity : reborn. A genuine glimpse of eternity.

here, down where dry moss crackle
is stretched like taut groundcover & your
footsteps knock. something of the upper tree-sway

is all germanic saga; cloud-heroes who
lean into each other, shoulder to shoulder, up
in the branches’ clatter. & something

of the kid swing’s extension
out to its zenith, its pause in the bolted wish-frame
behind closed doors, behind the light. everything
is as it seems

down-scaled, ongoing; reports arrive:
“-and he’s Swiss!”
“no, he’s dead”
