Poolüminal

estonio | Paul-Eerik Rummo

Ma olen nii mööduv
kurtis tüdruk merele
oi mis ma teen
sa oled igavene

ma paistan läbi kui sina
kurtis tüdruk aknale
oi mis ma teen
kõik näevad mu südant

ma avanen kui sina
kurtis tüdruk uksele
oi mis ma teen
päike astub sisse

ma olen nii väike
kurtis tüdruk päiksele
oi mis ma teen
sa oled nii suur

ma olen nii rumal
kurtis tüdruk targale
oi mis ma teen
kõik on nii targad.

Crooning

inglés

I am so fleeting

sighed the girl to the sea

oh, what can I do

you are eternal

I am transparent like you

sighed the girl to the window

oh, what can I do

my heart’s in full view

I open like you

sighed the girl to the door

oh, what can I do

the sun steps in

I am so small

sighed the girl to the sun

oh, what can I do

you are so large

I am so foolish

sighed the girl to the wise man

oh, what can I do

everyone is so wise

JÄLLE JÄLLE JÄLLE JÄLLE JÄLLE

estonio | Paul-Eerik Rummo

JÄLLE JÄLLE JÄLLE JÄLLE JÄLLE
Niipea kui sulen silmad
sünnib see uuesti
See mida üks mesinik rääkis
kahekümne viiest
tarust
mis põlesid ära
See tõestisündinud lugu
See tõestisurnud mesila

See pole luuletus. Luuletuseks peab aine selgima.
Ma olen oodanud, aga see ei selgi ega selgi ja enam
ma ei saa. See pole luuletus. Luuletusest otsite all-
tekste, tagamõtteid, sümboleid. Siin neid ei ole.
See pole luuletus –

    see on tulipiidega reha
    mis riisub kanarbiku söeks
    see on tulihammastega saag
    see on tarujalgade läbinärimine
    see on kärgede sulamine
see on see et mesi ei kustuta tuld
see on see et mesigi võtab tuld
see on see et mesilased nõelavad
    lõõskavat õhku
    nõelavad õhku
ja see et nad saavad otsa
    See on tuhkliblikate hõljumine

Siis tuleb kaugelt üks luuraja tagasi
tantsima teistele teadet
et kuskil ta leidis enneolematud õied

See on see et ma ei tea
kuidas tantsida talle selgeks
mis kõik siin juhtus
ja kuidas vastata talle
kui ta küsib
milleks see kõik?

Again again again again again

inglés

Again again again again again

As soon as I close my eyes

it happens once more

What a beekeeper once told me

about twenty five

beehives

that burnt down

This true-life story

This truly dead apiary

This is not a poem. The subject matter must crystallize in order to become a poem. I have waited, but it doesn’t crystallize, it just doesn’t and I can’t wait any more. This is not a poem. In a poem you look for hidden meanings, ulterior motives, symbols. But here there are none. This is not a poem.

this is a rake with tines of fire

that rakes the heather to cinders

this is a saw with teeth of fire

this is the gnawing through of the legs of the beehive

  this is the honeycombs melting

this is the fact that honey does not extinguish fire

the fact that even honey catches fire

the fact that the bees sting the blazing air

  they sting the air

  and then they perish

This is ash butterflies floating in the air

Then a scout returns from afar

to dance for others the news

that somewhere he found undiscovered flowers

This is the fact that I do not know

how to dance for him to see

all that happened here

or how to answer him

when he asks

what is this all for?

Maailm mu hinge

estonio | Paul-Eerik Rummo

Maailm mu hinge ei tungind, vaid imbus,
südamesse sisse ei murdnud, vaid sööbis.
Pikad ärkvel-ööd mu toanurgas ööbis,
pää ümber halo kui pühakunimbus.
Kas tema tahtis mind piinata või lohutada,
ainiti kärpides mu unelambi tahti?
Hällitada? Ärritada? Rahustada? Kohutada?
Kohustada millekski? Ah, kas ta tahtis
üldse midagi – lihtsalt ehk niisama
tunnil, mil silmatera mõõtmetuks pisenes,
mööduva teelisena tuulevarju sisenes,
oli – ja tundes, et hakkab piisama,
vöö sidus vööle jälle ja lahkus
viipeta – nii nagu ennist tuli.
Jäi mulle hingata ta lääguseta lahkus;
karmuseta kargus; ühtlane tuli –
tuli, mis ei hävita; värviline kainus;
hääl, mis on igal pool venna eest, õe poolest;
kirgas ükskõiksus; kõiksus on tõepoolest
üks – üksainus – ainus.

The world did not invade my soul, it seeped into it

inglés

The world did not invade my soul, it seeped into it

it did not break into my heart, it ate into it.

It spent long wakeful nights in the corner of my room,

a radiance round its head like a halo.

Did it want to comfort or torment me,

deliberately trimming the wick of my sleep-lamp?

Lull me? Rile me? Soothe me? Upset me?

Bind me in any way? Did it even want

anything at all? Perhaps at an hour

when my pupils shrank to pinpoints,

it entered like a passer-by in search of shelter,

rested a while, then sensing it was time to go,

braced itself and left without further ado -

as simply as it had come.

It left me to breathe its uncloying kindness,

its unbiting freshness; a steady flame -

a fire that does not destroy; a colourful sobriety;

a voice that is everywhere a brother, a sister;

a vivid indifference; wholeness is indeed

one - only one - oneness.
