bengalí | Sajjad Sharif

The Blind Hunter

inglés

A broken staff in hand
I move in search of prey
Over the horizons

bengalí | Sajjad Sharif

Beauty and the Beast

inglés

Sunshine piercing my skin, I saw you cross the acacia trees
You were leaving, but the boat had already left.
You looked back just once, but all around you
There were strong sunbursts driving nails into my eyes.

Worries gush out, blasts of salty air dislodge
The ancient butterfly totem; I become a pariah
In the realm of my own toppled dreams;
And you disappear, holding onto someone’s strong hand.

I roam among the trees, ravines and cataracts, disoriented;
I lived for a while among the animals like a beast.
O where is the lost world of witches, demons, dwarfs and fairies,
And the Beauty, who is nowhere to be found? Who can tell?

Night follows night, day breaks in between.
Wild cherries proclaim your name in the forest.
Slapping my chest I rush there, but alas! I am late.
I lose you just for a moment’s delay.

Once again I crawl and creep; on my head lands a volcano’s debris.
It’s time for me to sneak back to my cave.
Let this story be consumed by fire, or lie buried behind, as it wears
The false guise of the memorized parable of Beauty and the Beast.

bengalí | Sajjad Sharif

The Neighbour

inglés

In this sleeping, sunken village
The wind scattered and foreign
I get to know her or I don't
Through signs beyond language

Far away the barbed wire horizon
Far away among the clouds, the ecstatic
White flying tower, and
Down below a lonely red flower

Tell me, O flower, my neighbour
Is the wind your child?
It transmits incomprehensible signs
And more lives flare up within my life

In your dancing mudras
Why are you paying this non-obeisance?
In this night, no one can tell
Whether you are you, or me

Still every Geography curriculum
Keeps on teaching this:
In this night-watching, lofty village
The wind, by the way, blows

bengalí | Sajjad Sharif

Moontree

inglés

I forbade you to leave, but
                                               you
            didn't listen
                                   you flew all night
from one sky to the other
you
didn't take me on your back
                        O dark one
you are some tall deodar tree
                                               you
heard the angel of death crying
as night sentries hooted their signals
                                                           and
saw in a flash all the corpses
                        from the past
                                   coming back to life
rising from the depth of tomorrow
                                               you
                                   do not want
                        to be a tree
            but today
I
            want to be born
                        from your roots
