georgiano | Eka Kevanishvili

Leaving

inglés

On tiptoe.
As snow in February
Will cross the windy season.
Dirty with mud, the Surb-Sarkys’ wind will smash against the foothills
As the last passenger at a platform,
Her handkerchief fluttering,
Lets the late train pass,
Pass like blood passes from the single artery you cut the night before,
Slowly
Like a trembling drunk who is the last one
To leave a wake where the table is already half cleared.
And a guest
Sends useless praises to
The exhausted housewife.
That’s how it goes.
It melts away
Like a silver ring on a finger of an elderly person.
A breast on the body
Flies away
Like a dog before its death,
Gives way to another dog, gives up the yard it has been guarding
Then staggers along the road,
Feeling sad for its lost masters.
Carefully, holding her breath,
Like a mother
She closes the door of her baby’s room when she is sleeping.
Like a thief,
With a pocket full of somebody’s money—somebody’s future sorrow,
She runs away silently out of town.
So shamelessly,
To shoot the hearts of others.
My heart faints.
Until I let go—with the force of a witch’s spell,
I slip the soft-winged shoes you offered on him,
With the implication that they will
Return tomorrow,
They know the way.
To come back.
To return.

georgiano | Eka Kevanishvili

Ghosts: 33 Eshba Street (Sokhomi, Abkhazia)

inglés

The shelling has just stopped.
The house has just lifted off skyward,
Soared away.
And debris rained down.
I have just passed away.
Still warm and with no one yelling, “hey, you, bloodless people,
Don’t touch the fence, the fence is mine.”
Just a minute ago my yard was leveled,
Blood is creeping from torn apart trees.
How we were blooming
When the sand came suddenly.
And when the smoke cleared, I was deaf
And when the smoke cleared
My nose was soot covered and I was standing and fixing the gate.
I was grabbing the loose handle.
I was looking for you between the fallen shelves.
I was putting out the flaming curtains.
And locust swarms were covering the crops.
The steadfast guard—all of my scarecrows
With their noses buried in the dirt
Were mourning the perished harvest they could not save.
From this moment on
I am the dead, restless—
Don’t dare touch me.
From this day on, our ghosts will be able to fit into any
Cracks in any house.
Because our ghosts
Because our ghosts
Especially on the coldest
Evenings in winter,
Will start going up and down the stairs,
Seeking their own rooms,
Opening up the doors of others.
Don’t be scared, we’re just looking for our stuff,
We have nothing to do with your peace.
We shall not be wearing white, loose-fitting gowns
or anything alike,
Just ordinary, smiling
Boys and girls,
Inseparable from our blue jeans, quietly
Walking from one happiness to another
Like the penniless walk around in stores.
The gray sky has just slipped out the odd hail ball,
The hot hail.
This burned forest,
This stolen village
A retreating sea we are guarding with a fishing rod,
To reel it in.
Guarding with a net and wearing rubber, knee-high boots—
Maybe the fish will remember and swim our way.
Seventeen years have passed where you are.
Here, the bombardment has just finished.
Only this inscription on the gate heals against distance—
Again:
33 Eshba Street.
“Katherine
I love you.
That’s all”
The last letter of the last phrase, shot through.

georgiano | Eka Kevanishvili

Nothing More, Sir

inglés

Kind sir,
Untie my shoelaces.
My legs and white tennis shoes are resting in front of you.
Terribly tired with swollen-purple veins.
Sir, take off my clothing, what are you waiting for?
There are twelve buttons, undo them.
This coral-colored underwear,
This striped shirt grips my neck tightly,
These white socks
These worn-out jeans
I put on for these five minutes, for you
To wear them for five minutes is well enough,
That I need to slide smoothly into your parallel world
As if I’ve stepped into a mirror’s swell and turned into water.
Kind sir,
My face is at the disposal of your callused tongue—spare me the blue grease-paint.
How interesting, I wonder what remains instead of eyes.
Don’t worry about dust
While shuttling back and forth between these worlds,
Sometimes I’m on a dusty road—I’ll shake it off.
Sir, in fact I’m a terrible fashionista,
So strip me tenderly,
And don’t lose any buttons
Because when you are gone,
I must put on those clothes again,
Walk through another door and say:
What a hard day I’ve had, don’t question me.

georgiano | Eka Kevanishvili

Papaya, I Don’t Know You

inglés

When I love you I swallow the wind
Through the open south-facing window.
Other habits: spear breathing—
My disorder.
A friend of mine lives northwards.
She is a nursing mother and should now be asleep—
At night her milk returns.
—the unbelievable result of love—
When the scent of milk stupefies her man.
Their existence is my earthly order.

At such times my legs are wrapped around your waist,
My womb full.
I’m cradling your temples and head in my hands
Like a disc of fire,
When I turn your shoulders—the flame burns and I’m coughing from the smoke.
Then I pass my blown lungs for sails.
My wish is for you to sail into me. Stem right, stem straight, stem round,
I close upon the shore with mist,
And if land appears through the blue,
It won’t be interesting.
You sail until dawn.
Your tongue is the navigator.
Your arms, the reins.
My waist, a saddle.
My knees –a ploughshare,
the earth dark and wet.
And we are sowing.
The dinner lasts for half an hour.
We are feasting in the nude.
You kiss my palm and I bake bread with the unwashed hand.

At the same time,
Another friend of mine lives eastwards.
I can’t see him but can hear him from several neighborhoods away.
His calm lifestyle.
His morning snack.
His peaceful evenings.
His book-learned sex.
His experiences (attempts) in love.
Their existence is my earthly luck.

A woman is looking out from my mirror.
She has sunk into the mirror’s center because every side of it, each direction is already taken.
She stares at you like a crazy woman, a look that attacks you like falling rock.
When you sigh, the surf breaks on the sky and the woman returns.
Your existence means she has come back down to Earth.

georgiano | Eka Kevanishvili

Eka’s Gods

inglés

Hello God.
A friend of mine gave me your address,
But I barely found the way.
What's more, I’m an hour and a half late.
As it turns out you really live far from downtown.
Were you told that I was dropping by?
I have something to say.
It’s better to say it—to speak out.
I’m lying already—I want to wail.
Didn’t you make my nose grow larger
for lying?
And when you made my chest grow, do you remember how I protested?
By slouching my shoulders—since then I have remained that way.
However,
Still you bring yourself to dish out such dull punishments to me.
My father told me once,
God is in your eyes when you smile.
Did you know, since that day I’ve been keeping an eye on you in the mirror,
Since that very day I’ve been washing you with tears
When I want to make you disappear.
And now it’s the same.
Today I’ve taken this walk to your place
Just to ask you
If perhaps you’d go away,
If you won’t help me.
This is reckless,
but you should let me know today.
If you like, slip it under my pillow,
And I will dig with my hands and words
Shall fasten like leeches.
And even if I repeat these words flawlessly in a dream
I’ll be sure
To learn the prayer.
A prayer for your returning.

georgiano | Eka Kevanishvili

A Human-interest Story

inglés

Let’s go down.
Nothing more will happen in such a heavy snowfall.
Let’s go down, make imprints of our backs in the snow—
Hands apart, loosen up the head, let it roll over.
This ambition—to resemble a cross buried in snow
Demands you bid farewell to your head.
What a shot!
Turn the camera on me—come closer, you can
Move in small increments toward the earth.
In three hours I’ll turn into a mound,
a “human-interest story,” fallen into your hands
With spots of blood over the dazzling snow—
No, she didn’t jump, but
With her own hands she locked the door while others were at home in beds, sleeping,
She went down sixty stairs.
“Here I am, right where I want to be,” she said
To the apartment blocks lit up with light,
These honeycomb blocks so full of springtime honey
That if you poke your finger through a window, perhaps you’ll get some sweetness
From other people’s houses, to lay among them
Watching the sky above
Which looks like shattered ice on a winter lake.
Her eyes radiate shafts like a fishing pole,
And she’s fishing
With frozen tears sparkling on the hooks.
