Er loopt een trap de zee in
een golf slaat over een trede
een schip dat aan zijn kettingen trekt
zijn romp uitzet
een chauffeur opent het portier van de rijdende auto
en spuugt de betelnoot op de wegglijdende grond
een rollende sigaret spuwt vonken in het rond
bladeren kletteren tegen de passerende wagon
een man houdt in de metro zijn helm op
er is de regen die het vuur dooft
er is een hond die over twee schapen waakt
het veld langs draaft
een trap aflopen
je afzetten op een tree.

A stairway leads into the sea
a wave breaks across a step
a ship pulling against its chains
its hull bulging
a driver opens the door of the moving car
and spits the betelnut onto the receding ground
a rolling cigarette sprays a circle of sparks
leaves patter against the passing carriage
on the metro a man’s still wearing his helmet
there's the rain that’s putting out the fire
there’s a dog guarding two sheep
and trotting up and down the field
walk down a stairway
push off from a step.
