Fason

Manners

Manners maketh a child into civilized people
and ill-mannered parents usually pass on the problem
Although sometimes the act of having children
will improve parents in the most amazing manner

No child on earth is to the manner born
so get used to saying mind your manners
But don’t fill children’s head with all manner of notions
They should grow up to be grownups, not princesses or bodybuilders

When you hand your children to others to hold
(neighbors, workmates, your sports club, the in-laws),
when you stop clearing dangerous things from their path
(fire, love, the knives, disease)
you are parenting in a reasonable manner

And when they pick themselves up from a fall, that shows manners
when they come home on their own, that shows manners too
when you notice they pick their nose with their thumb now
when they finally grasp that Peter Pan is a scoundrel
when you see them dry their tears after the dog dies
when they say please pass the hash

Children with such proper manners will be civilized people
Children without them will move to the city

But manners is also being made in such an old-fashioned manner
as to stand at the window with a mug of broth
and wait for your prodigal, although it is now
thirty years since the last time you left the door open
for them to sooner or later come on home
